Just thought I would share my recent 'investigation' on my Euro 5.5 2014-08 FR ST 184. CUPA.

A few months ago I 'nipped' into Bristol to park at Cabot Circus to find the main entrance was a few meters past the CAZ entrance! meaning I needed to pay £9 for going a few meters past the sign into the multistory carpark or face a £120 tax (reduced to £60 if you pay within 14 days)!
Later that day I found that If I went in the side entrance that is outside the CAZ and so no charge! (ALL the signs direct you in the main entrance and through the CAZ sign/cameras) :mad:

Anyway - that is besides the point - just the trigger which got me thinking about Euro 5/6
My engine is the EA288 and there are Euro5 & 6 versions - the Euro 6 version (CUNA) just adds a variable cam phaser to help with cold start emissions I believe.

You can in theory update your car emissions for all these Low Emissions Zones (tax schemes) if you can prove your car has a low enough NOx and PM (for Diesel) to meet Euro 6 requirements. (It could have passed Euro 5 requirements easily?)
You do this by obtaining the COC - "Certificate Of Conformity" from VAG ([email protected]) for free, so you can see if your car could meet the requirements = Minimum emission standard: Euro VI (NOx and PM) Maybe it had easily passed Euro 5?

ULEZ requirements are:My Car
NOx = 0.080g/km (80mg/km)0.1423g/km (142.3mg/km)
PM = 0.0045g/km (4.5mg/km)0.00008g/km (0.08mg/km)

Particle mass is an easy pass - much lower than the Euro6 requirement - but my NOx is above the requirement so no, I can't change it and avoid this tax collection scheme!

I wonder if the 2.0 150 or 1.6 Euro 5's fare better?

What's mad is that value VW provide is 100% a lie anyway, we all know it is. They're all much higher even the "euro 6" engines due to the cheat software they ran.....I wonder then what happens if you say for example had to swap the engine and installed a euro 6 variant. You still can't get the car retested even though it meets Euro 6 standards.

Near Heathrow
Something that surprised me just before the introduction of the London ULEZ, I saw an advert for a '57 reg. Merc CLK220 CDI claiming it was ULEZ compliant and sure enough when I checked the reg, it was!!

Only need Euro 4 for Petrol's - could have been incorrectly advertised as a Diesel?

Every one 'optimises' for the emission's test schedule - just VW was made a scape goat.
Given there are defined emissions standards - I guarantee every major car manufacture will have whole departments going through the standards with a fine tooth comb and trying to get the best outcome for said standards. Even easier with autos to 'fudge' the test and why many new autos have hesitancies and dead spots so they 'perform' better under test.

The emissions standards are linked to the VIN - so changing the engine wouldn't effect that. You could in theory pay for some independent emissions testing and homologation but this would be thousands and you'd probably struggle to find an approval body to 'sign it off' as an individual and not a motor manufacturer.
