Tyre noise

Has anyone succeed to reduce tyre noise on the Altea? Fine car otherwise but the road noise is disturbing. In Sweden we have VERY rough asphalt so any hint are welcome.

also MICHELIN Primacy HP's, these have reduced the noise on mine at the front, still have original Bridgestone Potenza's on the rear which in comparison sound noisy as hell. Yes, road noise is a real problem with original Altea tyres, seem to have high level of grip in wet or dry though.

Any one think that Altea's stiff chassie settings have a negative influence on the noise level? Or that some noise reduce items found on same platform in the group (VW, Skoda, Audi) just not are mounted on the Altea? (Sorry if my English sucks but I think You understand me)

Try driving an Ibiza Sportrider version for a few miles, my dealer provided me with one while they were sorting out a few problems on my Altea..... The Sportrider had fat low profile Bridgestone tyres sport suspension etc and was as loud as sitting in a jumbo jet along side the wing with the windows open.... after half an hour in one of those anything seems quiet and peaceful...... The good news from what others have said is that I can look forward to my Altea getting quieter when the Bridgestones go.... I remember the first thing any self respecting motorbiker would do in the '70s would be to take off the Bridgestones and put proper British tyres on..... not because of the noise....just to make sure you could stay on in wet weather!!!!

I have Bridgestone tyres on the car now so there is some hope, I suppose, of silent rides in the future...... In my opinion the Skoda Octavia is the least noisy on that platform. Hopefully the New Ibiza will be quiet, Seat in Sweden needs a big sales success. One of the key issues here in Sweden with Seat are noise level. (Thinking of trying the Ibiza Sportrider, just to "adjust" my ears a little......)

Whatever tyres you choose make sure the tracking is aligned first as this has a big affect on tyre noise (and wear). Many came from the factory on the wrong settings (as far as I understand). I eventually setttled on Michelin Primacy HP's as a low noise tyre and was very happy with the results including the levels of grip in both wet and dry conditions.

Good point about wheel alignment, I suspect some uneven wear on right front tyre! Must check that out.......

I had my alignment checked last week, and my rear passenger wheel had 2.2 degrees of camber  the guy checking it said just about every newish Vw/audi type car was the same leaving the factory! They have now revised their settings apparently!:)

Many thanks for all advice on this matter! I have something to go on making my Altea less noisy. (To my surprise one Swedish magazine had tyre noise as a problem with the new Audi A4, and new Mitsubishi Lancer was so bad that factory had to make changes in production and offers a kit for reducing noise on delivered cars, so Seat is not alone..... )

Thanks for highlighting the issue, I have to admit I was slightly disappointed that the road noise on my new Altea was worse than my old Pug 307 ...... but that had Continental tyres!!! Your post has at least brought out some valuable hints and tips.

I must add that I like my Altea very much despite some issues. Nice design, lots of space, back-seat good enough for a queen, and many more things. (however, I been fantasizing about the new Ibiza due the crazy fuel prices here in Sweden lately......)
