Tyre noise or wheel bearing?

Done a search on this and each case is different.

Does anyone know what this noise is on my LCR (40k on clock).....

All four of my tyres are the standard P-Zeros and are all on the limit. The fronts seem to be below the limit across the centre.

The droning noise happens over 20mph and get louder up to 70 where is seems to improve. Its also seems to be not as bad when going round LH corners. Its been happeing for 6 months but has got worse in the last couple.

I have heard the P-Zeros are bad for noise, especially when they are low on tread like mine. I am planning on new F1s soon, but I am not convinced this will solve the problem.

Any Ideas?

well seeing as you need new tires anyway, get the best tyres (F1's are very good) and see if the noise goes away. If it does, no need to panic - if it doesn't, then look elsewhere.
I don't have any droning on my car, and I run F1's.

Its worth checking the inner and outer cv joint rubber boots. They tend to split and dump their grease, leaving you with noisy drive shafts. That would produce the symptoms you have.

Can't be that I have just had it thru its 40k service and nothing was picked up. And i checked them a few months back and they looked spot on.

You can often get a small split in them in one of the pleats. Its definitely worth checking. I wouldn't put too much faith in the service techs finding it.

Change your tyres, if you are down to the legal limit, there is a lot of rubber on the road, generating road noise. With the size tyres we run, I can vouch from experience, it gets a bit droney. At least then you can eliminate the rubber, if its still there ..............repost!!

One of the lads at work had a droaning noise on his Rover 400 which was driving him mad! He said it had been like it ever since he had it. Anyway, he thought being an old car & not knowing it's history, it was bound to be a mechanical thing like wheel bearings. So we changed them for him on a night shift, and they made no difference. He changed a few other bits, and again, no difference. In the end, the only thing left to change was the tyres - the one thing he didn't really want to spend out on as they were almost new Avon ZZ1's. Anyway, since he bought the new tyres (I don't know what make they were) he says it's like driving a new car, made a world of difference!

If you need new tyres anyway, I'd change them first! :p
