Came back from holiday the other day late at night and then headed to work the next morning quite early. A couple of minutes from home and I hit this massive pot hole that had developed since I had been away. I saw it too late. It was on quite a narrow bit of road and a lorry was coming in the other direction so I couldn't move to the side to avoid it.

The thump was very severe and I really did expect the tyre warning light to come on. It never did. By the time I got to work 25 miles away and a bit bleary eyed, I had forgotten about it.

The next morning I forgot about the pot hole but when I came across it, it had been filled in with tarmac thank goodness.

Never thought anything of it again plus I haven't been out in the car since. Then today something caught my eye as I walked passed my car in the drive. One huge bulge in the sidewall of my near side front tyre, the one that walloped the pot hole.

I generally keep quite an eye on my wheels and tyres, let alone the car in general so I'm very quick to spot any marks etc.

I suspect the pot hole has caused the tyre damage. Anyone else think this is possible?

Will take the wheel off tomorrow morning and put my horrible spare one on before I head to work. I hate doing 50mph on a motorway. Grrr.

It's very possible that the pot hole you hit has caused the damage. However you should have taken pics with a ruler in the pot hole to show that it is more than 60mm deep before it was repaired. Methinks you are out of luck but take pics of your tyre and keep your eyes open for a different pot hole that isn't repaired yet and tell a little white lie to your local council.

I hear what you're saying but it was impossible to stop. It is a major commuter route - it was 7am in the morning and the road would have remained busy for a good few hours, there is nowhere to stop nearby and there are no pavements. The road is also an accident black spot. If I could have stopped at the time I would have.

C'est la vie as they say.

Tyre is now off and temporary one on.

Could have been worse, I hit one in my old LCR which bent and cracked the rim. New wheel and tyre required, £450 lighter as a result.

I feel for you guys too.

Alloy looked OK so fingers crossed. The wheel is with a garage at the mo while they get hold of a new tyre for me so they'll check it out properly.

I hate these 50mph space saver wheels - not funny when part of my commute is on motorway.
