Turning On Full Lock

Good morning all

So I have recently got my new 2019 Cupra Ateca from a Seat main dealer and the car drives and performs well.

However I have noticed when driving on full lock such as parking there appears to be an intermittent clunk and a weird feeling like the wheel is fighting or skipping instead of making a smooth turn. It does do this when turning left or right.
Sometimes it is more noticeable and sometimes it is fine.

I have checked all the tyre pressures in accordance with the sticker in the car.

Fronts 38 PSI and 35 in the rear (Tyres are Pirelli 245/40/19 all round )

Could it be a geometry alignment issue although the front tyres have even wear?

Has anybody else felt this with their car when using full lock?

I will be contacting the dealer first thing tomorrow morning as I am not happy with this.

When I test drove the car I didn't have to use full lock.

Can't say I have in my standard Ateca. Steers perfectly. Years ago I did have a dealer not tighten the wheel nuts... I say dealer, it was Halford service centre. That produced an effect 😣. Rattled going thru the Dartford Tunnel. They also had the ability of fixing the steering wheel back on at a 30° angle. That ones been known with Seat dealers and owners getting agitated.

Hi Tell

After searching online I think the symptoms I'm experiencing are quite common on cars with wide low profile summer tyres in cold conditions and it is worse the more the tyres are worn.
It is to do with ackerman steering geometry set up and certain Mercedes suffer badly.
Apparently the rubber doesn't flex in the cold and causes the symptoms on full lock.
Will still contact the dealer tomorrow to explain plus the weather is expected to be much warmer so I will test again tomorrow.

Ideally someone with a Cupra Ateca can advise??

Mine are 225 / 55 R17 W.... Cupra gets fancy stuff. I changed mine to Michelin Cross Climate All Season once the factory fitted ones were worn out, they were Bridgestone whatever summer tyres. In 2017 the choice for VAG SUV all season tyres was not existent so you got an SUV 4Drive on summer tyres. Now got what I wanted.

Hi all

Quick update on my issue.
Yesterday the weather in Manchester was 14 degrees so I took my car out for a test using full lock on an empty car park and there was none of the issues I experienced when the weather was freezing so happy days.

When searching the net it seems a very common issue on a lot of makes of high performance cars using wide low profile tyres with summer tyres.

Every day is a school day.
