Turbo cooling?

We've just added a mk1 leon cupra (2003) to our 2001 ibiza cupra. The ibiza continues to make a noise after switching off for 10 minutes. I always believed that this was the coolent that continued to flow to cool the turbo. The Leon doesn't make the same noise afterwards. Can anyone shed any light on:

a. Am I right that the noise is the cooling?

b. Should the leon make the same noise?

Thanks in advance.

some leons do as far as i know i think its the cupra r that does as mine doesnt and its an 02 LC, and yes the buzzing is cooling it down although are you letting it cool for a few minutes before turning off??

The noise is a water pump for cooling, and as far as I know the Cupra R is the only one to have it? Could be wrong though.....?

Fans and the water pump are two separate issues. The fans will kick in on any car that has reached high enough temperatures. The water pump is something separate totally.

The water pump is an electrically driven pump fitted to the LCR which circulates coolant round the turbo for 10 minutes after switching off the ignition. It does it everytime regardless of temperature.

Not as far as I know. The schematics for the engine show a secondary coolant system which is electrically driven and just appears to circulate coolant round the turbo and cylinder head after the ignition is turned off. I am not a techie, I just looked at the pics so I may be wrong.

so basicaly a turbo timer is waste of money espically for cupra r! as it has it own coling system built in!

It would seem to be a bit of a waste of money to me as the cooling system is still going to run for 10 mins after the turbo times turns the engine off. It may still help though I guess.

Thanks for the thoughts fella's. Seems a bit strange to put the cooling on the ibiza and the LCR but not the Leon Cupra. Will definetly have to be more careful about letting it cool down properly!

BCM - If you're doesn't sound like the pump is running, I'd make sure you give the car a nice long cooling down period before shutting off and I'd get the car into Seat or a VAG independent garage to be checked out. Cooling the turbo properly is very important.

i ALWAYS allow cooling preiod, whether its sitting in my drive running for a few minuets or taking it easy for bout 2 or 3 miles on the way home (below 2.5k rpm) just to allow it to cool a bit better, need to check for that self cooling thing tho, its in for a service next friday so will get it checked then!
