Tuning chip

This has probably been discussed before but can't find anything on the search. Chip module on ebay by Auctiva. Claims 35 hp increase but more importantly to me better MPG. Any good? Waste of money? Harmless or potentially harmfull?

Gotta agree with sssstew, cheap resistor box, don't touch it. They cause faults to occur.

There are only 2 real options,

i) a proper tuning box, Tunit, Dragon, PSI are a few well respected names in this field, but there are others. These are all adjustable to suit your car.
The power increases are there, but delivery will not be as smooth as a remap.

ii) a remap, this is the best way, and if you shop around, will not cost you much more than a high quality tuning box.
power delivery will be smoother

hope that helps

I wouldn't worry too much about answering his question Stew. He was only spamming to get to 10 posts, presumably so he could use the Private Message system. Take a read of his other posts.

Got a Tunit on my Altea 2.0 TDI 140, goes better, economy about 10% worse, turn it up & it smokes like an old school bus! Would I buy another? Hmmm, well, the mid range punch is really good with it fitted, but I recently had to have a new engine as the turbo failed & took the engine with it, I think this is down to the turbo spinning faster. Just glad its a company car!!!!

if thats the case i would have said the box setting is to high i would try turning it down i have found that on my brothers old bora 100bhp with an original tuning box it was rapid set high reved brilliant but used more fuel and when we turned the box right down the torque was amazing faster then on the highest setting and the pull was from so low down i would deffinatly reccomend playing with the setting it should produce much more smoe then standard if any atall

I don't think that the turbo spins any faster when the tuning box is fitted, it's more to do with extra fuelling hence the smoke coming out the back as unburnt fuel. I read somewhere that the 2.0 140bhp engines, and perhaps some others, were using two makes of turbo, one that would last and one that had a tendancy to kill it's self. It could be more related to this than the tuning box?

DPT Chip

I have a DPT (Diesel Performance Tuning) Chip on my XL Tdi 170. Now turns out around 210. Performance much better and fuel economy...if driven correctly, also noticeable.

Worth a go..

Yep, turbo works off the exhaust, but if the engine receives more fuel then it can rev better/harder therefore causing the turbo to spin faster. Thats what the Dutch manufacturer of DPT told me in the Autosport show two years ago. He suggested that the 140 tdi engine is only safe up to 'about 170bhp' due to the small turbo over revving, but the 170 tdi engine has a larger, roller bearing turbo & is safe to 'over 220bhp'.

Incidentally, tried a DPT box from Randstad (UK agent) on the wifes Leon 150, absolutely no difference! It was one of the early analogue ones, had many conversations with Wim Essing the Dutch owner but no joy with extra power. Had my money back from Randstad no problems, decent people.
