Transmission/diff whine!!!????

Just joined Cupra.net today as I have just bought an '05 lean cupra R with 12K miles on it. From about day 2 of owning it I started noticing a whing noise from the engine bay when I lift off the accelerator. The noise is really noticeable in 1st when I let the accelerator go after reaching 20mph approx. The car sounds like an old mini or a washing machine. My local garage reckons it is something to do with the diff but they have asked me to run it for another 2K miles to see if it gets worse so they might be able to isolate the noise better. It is under warranty till 08/08 but could I be staring down the barrel of a massive bearing failure if nothing is done soon? It definately sounds bearing related whether it be gearbox or diff. Any comments or first hand experience would be ideal. Thanks.

Cheers for the welcome. Hopefully someone might be able to shed some light on it. How did you get your profile picture uploaded? Can't seem to find a way to do it? Cheers.

Cheers Smiff. Sounds like we have the same problem. It is due a service in August so my dealer and I agreed they would take a better look after another 2K miles which I can do by August. As you say, I have a long time till the warranty runs out but reckon I will take the stance that since the dealer thinks there is something up with it, they should fix it now. Cheers.

I've had my LCR for approx 2 months and I have the same noise. The Skoda garage said its prob the diff as everything else checked correct but said hat the only way to fing out would have been by stripping the gearbox. . . . . .

This might be totally useless to you... but if your dealer has acknowledged the problem and has asked you to keep an eye on it for the next 2k miles, just do that. If it does get worse or there is a total failure, then you're covered under their warranty and the fact their 'professional' advice instructed you to leave it.

You might find the noise you're hearing is gearbox related, as they can sometimes be quite noisy. It doesn't always mean there is a problem though, hence them asking you to monitor it and see what happens.

My advice, is to keep an ear out for anything that makes it worse or better. For instance... is the noise more prominent when the car is fairly cold? Or is it more prominent when the car is hot or at least up to full temp? Is one gear worse than the rest? Basically, see if there is any pattern to it and make notes along the way. Then, when you take it back to the dealer, they will be armed with all the info they need.

Good luck :)

Thanks everyone for the advice. The pattern I have noticed so far with the noise is that 1st gear is definately the worst then 4th at about 30mph when you lift off. The noise is virtually unnoticeable in the others. Hot or cold, the noise is there. Thankfully it is under warranty so I am relaxed about it. Best case scenario is that I get the dealer to strip it all only for them to tell me everything is fine and the box/diff is just a noisy bugger. It's a good excuse for me to drive it hard to see if it gets worse. :D Hopefully some answers will be available in August when it will be looked at again. I will be sure to let everyone know.

I have the same kind of whine in 1st gear in my LCR. It's been there since I bought it 2nd hand and doesn't appear to be getting any worse and I've had it 5 months. It does sound out of place is such a modern car but I can live with it.
