After 5 years of owning and modding my Cordoba SX it has gone to a new owner.

A new addition to our family meant we needed a more practical family car with rear doors and room for pushchairs and all the rest of the gear that's needed for a baby.

I limited my budget to 3k and started looking for Leon and Toledo TDI's, I soon found that vehicles for sale in this price range were either very high mileage, low spec or poor condition. I then started to look at petrol versions of the Toledo, 1.6 is too under powered, I'm not a big fan of the 1.8 20 valve normally aspirated version, 1.8 20vt was out of my price range:cry:

I found a 2001 model 2.3 V5 170 bhp for sale, not quite the sensible family car I was looking for but it was well within my price range and also in my favourite colour. Aswell as all the normal V5 toy's like elecrtic leather and alcantara seats, climate control and cruise control this 1 had a few opional extras, sat nav, rain sensing wipers and auto dipping rear view mirror, sounded like a good base for a project. The V5 is in pretty good condition, a small scrape in the bottom of the passenger rear door, a couple of stone chips, a few light scratches, a couple of wheels curbed and the normal inner door handles peeling. I got an insurance quote which was £7 a year less than I was paying for my Cordoba 1.6  so a deal was done and I'm now the owner of a Toledo V5:D

A few faults I have noticed since I have had the car in the last month, rear doors leaking when it rains which is an easy / cheap fix, passenger heated mirror glass doesn't demist a replacement glass should fix this, drivers vanity mirror light doesn't work most likely just a bulb, bakes squeak just need a clean up, but the most annoying / expensive thing I missed was the engine cooling fans 1st speed don't work so the aircon gets cold but it builds up excessive pressure in the system and makes the engine cooling fans pulse in 2nd speed mode.

Only mod so far is to up-date the sat nav cd from the 2001 disc to the 2007 final edition disc, at least our house is now recognised by the sat nav.

More mods to come ...................................

Nice car! I believe the 'optional extras' you refer to are actually standard equipment on the 170. When they swapped the engines over they also swapped a few toys. So for example the 150 got heated seats, we got sat nav.

I'm assuming you've checked under the bonnet to make sure it definitely is the 170? The swap occurred somewhere around the turn of the century, so I made sure I knew what V5 I was getting.

Can I ask though, where did you get the updated sat nav disc from? I managed to find one that I thought might have worked, but it wasn't recognised.

The Toledo is definitely a practical family car, the boot seems almost limitless in its ability to swallow luggage! Just one piece of advice, put a blanket or something underneath the kiddies seat, the seats are reasonably cleanable but you don't want to tempt fate!!

The sat nav disk required is the ' Blaupunkt tele atlas non DX ' version. Hopefully the link below works.

http://www.seat.co.uk/generator/su/uk/SEAT/site/Service/original-accessories/main.html

I bought a brand new disc off ebay for £23 but it looks like a copy, works fine though so I can't really complain for the price.

My Toledo is definately a 170 bhp version, already had to replace 2 coil packs :( When I was looking at Toledo's I saw a couple of 170 bhp versions without sat nav, not sure if they had auto wipers though.

Mods have been slow only Bosch aero wiper blades, but I have had to re-seal all the doors due to water leaks, then the passenger front window regulator broke, then the passenger rear window regulator broke, now the drivers door lock needs repacing as it doesn't recognise the door has been opened so the car locks itself again if the ignition isn't switched on and the seat memory also doesn't work due to this, AC doesn't work due to the cooling fans 1st speed doesn't work. Front anti roll bar bush's are noisy. The car has been a project just to keep on the road let alone modify, but I have got a few parts ready to go on.

Still a lovely car to drive when I can get it off the other half.

Wow, certainly sounds like a 'project' car!! And there I was thinking that the Tolly V5 had a nice combination of reliable chassis, reliable engine and reliable electrics! Did you get it really dirt cheap then, or did the problems surface after you bought it?

At least you solved my problem of a failed sat nav disc, I had got hold of a 'DX' version of the maps! Time to keep an eye out for the non DX version, although I can't see any on Ebay at the moment.

I guess the changeover between versions wasn't as cut and dry as I thought, you must have seen a few that were in the middle of the crossover. I only ever seemed to find 170's with the same spec.

Good choice, would love a V5. Although reading your list of problems already I'm quite happy with my trusty oil burner!

Will be watching this thread with interest though, not many moded Toledos out there and mine's making very slow progress!!

Tip: Get yourself a Cupra R splitter (under £20 from dealer) - makes a big improvement to the standard bumper, check out my thread for pics of it fitted to my car!

A long time up-dating this thread and not a lot has changed with the Toledo until the drivers front road spring broke last week  so to take advantage of the stuation the car is now fitted with a set of Eibach Sportline springs, new top mounts and front anti roll bar bush's. The ride is very good, in fact smoother than the standard springs and far less body roll:D A couple of quick if not the best pictures to show the new ride height.

Larger wheels now required ;)

Cheers, no problems yet, goes over speed bumps ok as well, just got to be sensible and should be ok. The springs were second hand off ebay from a VW Bora TDI which are apparently the same as the V5 Toledo, the springs were only a few months old and cost less than £50 delivered :D

Very pleased with the height it now looks more aggresive without looking OTT, I do not like the Toldeo too slammed as the rear wheel moves forward in the arch and looks wrong IMHO.

They look like the twin spoke 18's I think? I've got the same alloys but the 17's, they seem alot closer to the discs than yours.

I didn't even know they did the wheels as 18's until I went to the Midlands Rolling Road day, I was wondering why a couple of the cars had the same wheels but a size larger.

The LCR wheels are indeed 18's, if your wheels look the same but are only 17's you have got the Leon FR plus wheels. The FR plus is a Leon diesel that from the outside looks nearly identicle to a Cupra R except the wheels are an inch smaller, twin round tail pipes instead of the oval tail pipe, smaller silver caliper brakes ( not red Brembo's ) and different badges.

Hi Colin C you mention in your above thread that
"rear doors leaking when it rains which is an easy / cheap fix"

My V5 does the same thing - Whats the fix?

Have a look in the Leon section for 'leaking door seals fix', it's the same issue that they have. Basically the bitumen door seals have to be replaced.

Hi Bumrush as Slimy stated I carried out the same repair to the door seals as listed in the Leon section, if carried out correctly including unblocking the drains it will stop the leak. I would also advise doing all 4 doors !

A quick up-date on the car, not a lot has changed due to moving house in October and the arrival of a baby daughter 3 weeks ago has slowed things down.
