Toledo No hot air

Evening all,

Driving home from work this evening, i noticed that there was no hot air coming from the Vents. After changing the controls to maximum heat the temperature changed slightly, but even then it was JUST about warm.

I did notice that the engine temp gauge was flitting between 80-90c when the engine was running at a near constant speed, so i think i need to pay a visit to my local steelership and get another greentop. [:@]

The car in question is a 1999 1.8 20V Toledo with manual Aircon.

No hot air can mean that the coolant level is very low, so low that the heat exchanger isn't getting any fluid through it. A quick check of the coolant reservoir would be in order.:)

cant remember if it was this site or another site..............but a car had same prob....
hot water is not being distributed through your heater matrix.
check your levels and also watch the coolant temperature.....could be the good old water pump not pushing the water round the system!
but be careful if it is the pump the engine will overheat.
will try find a link.....;)

I checked the coolant level this morning and it does not seem to have dropped. Am i correct in thinking that the thermostat may be stuck and as a result once the coolant has circulated around the block it isn't reaching the heater matrix.

If ths is the case then should i replace both the thermostat and Temp sensor, or could there be something else wrong.

Hiya Sam,

If it is the waterpump then all is good as it was replaced in December last year by a local garage, and as such should just about be in warrenty. When the pump was changed along with the Cambelt i was insistant that they use one with a copper impeller, which i believe is the one they used.

What i have found is:

- Temp gauge is flitting between 85-90C, but it never goes any higher even when sat in traffic.
- Both the return and feed pipes from the radiator are approximately the same temperature, but the return does (bottom) does feel cooler.
- The coolant level is correct, and there are no visible leaks.
- The Oil filler cap is free from Mayo, so is the coolant expansion tank.

The long and the short of it is, I'M STUMPED.

Hmmm if your car is not over heating then the coolant system is working ok i would think...

when you adjust the temperature manually (with the knob) does it feel any different to before you had the problem?

just been thinking.......
the knob that adjusts where your air blows to, is a cable assemblage that pull on flaps, shutting the various directions off.....making the air go where you want it.
Does the temperature switch work the same............a cable making a flap near the heater matrix open and close to allow a certain amount of heat come into the car compared to cold outside air..........could the cable be disconnected? or the mechanism be stuck only allowing cool air into the system.

will have a look in a bora manual and see if i can find some technical terms....
