Tinkering with Electric Mirrors

Evening all,

Last weekend i replaced the manual door mirrors on my Toledo (1999 1.8 20v) with a pair of folding electric ones, but i cant get the :censored: things to work.

What i needed was:
- Both door looms
- Door mirrors (Both of which are electric folding and heated)
- Electric window switch for front and back windows
- Door mirror switch

Everything apart from the door mirror switch was tested before being removed from a friends 2001 Cupra which he bought for it's engine transmission etc etc, and was working prior to being removed. The door mirror switch was bought from a breakers yard and as such is untested.

Possible causes
- Fooked Door mirror switch, how do i test it
- Damaged door mirror, if one was damaged would it effect both
- Missing relay?
- Feature needs to be enabled via Vagcom?
- Something else

Any input would be a great help

I don't see why it should affect it but on the V5 the mirrors also have a connection to the memory function on the electric seats so that it memorises the preferred mirror settings along with the seat settings for different drivers.

However, if you don't have electric seats I still don't see why it shouldn't work without a failure of one of the parts you mention.

Collectively it only took 4 hours, which included securing the glass while the carrier panel was out.

It's worth reading this beforehand as it makes the process a LOT less painful.

To find where the loom terminates in the car, remove the plastic trim at the bottom of the door where it goes under the dash and fold the carpet back. To be honest i was surprised at exactly how easy it was, so much so i'm going to do the electric rear windows next weekend. :)

Hi bud, i am in the process of sorting out the wiring for Sam20V so i can modify her existing manual mirrors to electric folding as well as putting in rear electric windows.
Reading the parts list you posted and looking what i have got i think that there is a few other parts you will need.
It seems that all the convenience functions, central locking, alarm, electric windows/seats/mirrors, interior lights etc all work through a little box under the dash. Problem is, from what i can make out, the little box for the s20v (front leccy windows only) is different to that from a vehicle with 4 leccy windows. Your existing one will have 3 plugs in it and the new one will have 2 plugs in it. I recon that to do the job in Sams Toledo im going to have to replace the convenience control unit and throw in some additional wiring. Im currently in the process of marking and stripping out the cables from a loom from a V5 toledo but its a real slow process and a total rats nest of wiring all stuck togeter with some manky gluey tape but im getting there. Will try and take some pics tonight if i can.
Keep me posted to how you get on and any wiring diagrams you can get your hands on would be usefull.
Also i think, but not certain on this yet, is that the electric window motors have a control unit for each door in them and im sure i've read somewhere that the ones for foldy mirrors & 4 leccy windows are different to the ones for 2 leccy windows.

Hope this helps, let me know how you get on as i have all this excitment and fun to come when mine dont work!

On the V5 (my '99 model year anyway) the left hand mirror also has the facility to move independently in response to reverse gear being selected (to give you a view of the kerb). I personally never bother to use that feature unless there is a particularly tricky obstacle as I normally find I'm parked up by the time the mirror has adjusted it's position. From memory they may have dropped this feature from later models. You may need to consider whether you need (or want) to wire up for that feature also.
