Hi all, i am just a newbie to the forum and also a new seat 1.2 sport owner. i have read in the forum that quite a lot of you have had problems with timing chains after about 30k- 50k miles. I am currently at 3k and a little worried about what I have read so far, I was hoping to get some good feedback on just how long the 1.2 Ibiza can go without jumping or snapping chains? Or should I sell it when it near's 30k? lol

Thanks for being patient with a newbie. :)

Dealers!.. not to be trusted!.. My dealer is Seat Linwood, when i got my car the rear reflector was missing on the drivers side, that was 3 months ago!.. still awaiting the replacement part. when i phoned 2 weeks ago and asked about it, they said it was in stock, just come up and get it fitted, but when i arrived they didn't have it??.. i love the car though!

Not just the dealer tho. Was seat also claiming things are all good and happy. I guess I'll just have to hold them to it some how.

you have a warrenty that lasts for 3 years or 60k miles witch ever comes first so don't sweat it

then after that you can pay and extend it for 1,2 or 3 more years

but as said yours is new and should have the chain tensioner mod fitted

Timing Chain is known fault but nobody official ie SEAT want to commit - however, the dealer I bought my SEAT from denied all knowledge of a timing chain fault - Dales, Cornwall - however, I have since taken my car to another SEAT dealer in the midlands and they confirm it's very common - if only I had known before I was stung for a bill for £1400 recently because of the damage the timing chain did by jumping two teeth - I would have got it checked out! Am currently in touch with SEAT. Why was a recall not done on this when there is an obvious known fault with this year engine model.

Hi - thank god you should be saying - it was a costly job - unfortunately I and other Cupra members weren't so lucky - suppose it's just luck of the draw.

Cheers

Hi,
my chain jumped whilst having a service at a private garage... cost me £400 am trying to claim from seat but they are saying if i had taken the car to them they would have given me a good will gesture but they were too busy to take the car and it was undriveable. therefore they are saying that they wont pay out.

can anyone please help me? did use a couple of quotes from this site and others and even a daily telegraph clipping that quoted the problem in 2007.

thanks

Bear in mind also that any generally any problem you read on forums is a minority case,

Unless there is a gathering of riled-up men holding burning torches outside your dealer, it's a problem that may happen to a few thousand cars, so don't fret too much :)

Still slightly miffed though, tis very expensive if it does happen, but there is always the tensioner kit.. mine's a 1.2 on 55K, getting a little noisy too..

By the way, anyone got an exact figure for the kit? and has anyone on here had it fitted?

the timing chain upgrade; all it is has is extended chain guards, the tensioner is the same on all of them, the oil pressure in that side of the engine also helps to tension the chain, after rebuiling my engine i drove around with an oil gauge on to make sure there was sufficient oil pressure in there. :)

me and a work mate done mine 2weeks ago, wasnt too bad to do what took the longest was getting the cover off. If you have done timing chains in the past you'll find it easy as. Honestly was a plessure to do as theres loads of room to get your hands down side of the block. Also my chain had not jumped but fitted the modified kit incase, better to be safe than sorry.

My brother has a 03 plate 1.2S, which was previously my fathers - owned from new.

Having just passed 100,000 miles, his local dealer (Holders of Congresbury) have just replaced the tensioner as a precuationary measure - they'd recently had another high miler slip it's chain.

Aside from this high mileage tensioner failure, Holders hadn't had any other 1.2 they'd sold slip it's chain - this is a local dealer that my family have been using for 10 years now that we have a very good relationship with, so we're happy enough to believe this.

As mentioned above, the forums often have a habit of making a rare problem seem more common than it is - many people only stumble across the forums when searching for information about a problem their car's encountered.
