Throttle Body Nitemare!!

Hi all,

I have had a nitemare of a day with the throttle body in my leon 1.6 16v (54).

The car went in to have the throttle body cleaned out. The mechanic removed the engine cover and sprayed the solution into the throttle body, he did not remove the throttle, just sprayed directly inside it, he allowed the solution to do its job and also opened the butterfly valve to allow the solution to pass through, it was a lot of solution that went down there, he then wiped the outer casing of the throttle body and popped the cover back on and started the car.
The car was very reluctant to start but eventually did. A lot of fumes came out of the exhaust and the mechanic said this was the solution getting the dirt out.

As soon as he accelerated the car, the engine management light came on and the epc light. The car started to idle like crazy up and down.
After a long drawn out day with the car eventually going through vag-com and having the throttle body re-aligned, the car was throwing up the following fault codes again and again:

17961 P1553

17912 P1504

I have replaced the MAF / Thrust sensor (Part no: 036-906-051) from GSF, but still to no avail.
The car is idiling up and down like crazy, I have tried to take the car for a blast and the same thing, car losses power and full foot on acceleration leads to the car not going anyware!!

Could someone please shine some light on my problems.

Thanks

Hi,

17912 P1504 would seam to point towards an air leak around the inlet maifold, you may have had this before the "clean".

Tried look for the other code but no joy other people have had this and not found the cause:(
Hopfully some one else can help.

Check all your hoses - definately sounds like a leak, well, it does to me anyway.
I had this once - found I hadn't done one of my jubilee clips up.. silly me!

Hi,
Did you get any luck sorting this one out? Im having the exact same problem. Car in for service, airbox off for new filter, noticed throttle body dirty so cleaned out before refitting air box. Will not run right now and EPC light is on. Fault codes 17961 and 17912 keep coming up. Have checked for air leaks and have also changed MAP sensor. No improvement and dont know where to go next. Any ideas?

Cheers

i know time has moved on since this thread... but when using throttle body cleaner make sure it doesnt get 'into' the workings! Always tilt the throttle body downwards so that the spray runs straight out. do same with both sides. Apparantely it can work its way into electrics other wise and screw things up!

Hello guys,

Seems like a long time since this post was last visited, but it seems I have the exact problem with my SEAT Leon 1.6 16V 77kW 105HP. I have removed the throttle body and cleaned it up. After I put it back on and after a random amount of time, usualy when engine idling, but not as a rule, the EPC and CEL lights come on because of 17961 code. No problems until now except for the lights. The engine still runs OK, until the second code appears (17912) and it cuts the acceleration altogether. I erase the codes with VCDS, and of course ignition OFF, then ON, start engine and everything works like a charm again until the same thing happens again, first 17961, and after a while 17912 and BOOM!!

From 2009 on maybe someone discovered the problem and might want to share their insight. Thank you all in advance and happy day!!

I know I'm dragging up an old thread but these guys had the exact same issue as me, the post above by wolfie is almost identical, just that mine is constantly on from start. Cleared the codes with vcds, happens again time and time again.

hello Lozzy,

I know it's a very late response and I don't know if u solved the problem but it's been a few months. I managed to solve the problem after all after trying a few different methods of adaption for the throttle body that i found described on the net. I don't remember which one exactly worked but that was my problem. Apparently the adaptation wasn't done right.

P.S. If u solved the problem, hope it helps others.

Best regards.

Hi thanks for the reply. Did manage to sort it in the end, the throttle body itself was faulty, and we had a split brake servo line. I also cleaned the egr by leaving it in a jug of mr muscle oven cleaner over night. All of this seemed to fix it, has been running perfect ever since and mpg has shot up too :D
