throttle body cleaning

i was speaking to someone at work today about cleaning throttle bodies.

i see that most people on here actually take it out to clean....

....the guy at work was saying that it is possible to clean them without removing, by using a spray (Normfest VC980 Carb & Throttle Cleaner) into the pipe (can't remember if he said spray in the pipe that goes from the airbox, or in the pipe at the other side of the MAF), but would need to use most of the can.

it wont completely clean it (only scrapping the stuff off can do it), but it would be a vast improvment

anyone done it this way?
i am changing the MAF on Tuesday, so want to do the TB as well, and would prefer not to take it off

for the sake of 4 bolts take it off and give it a good clean mate. you would need to take off the intake pipe to clean it anyway as spraying from the maf down aint going to clean it

made a mild improvment to mine - it wasnt that bad but now has a more steady idle.
made a huge improvement to the wifes golf - very steady idle, doesnt stall when sitting now. but then again it was covered in crud took 2 cans to clean it properly

You dont have to do throttle body alignment if you leave it plugged in, just remove the 4 allen bolts and leave the plug in on the bottom. Its reccomend to do a TBA when servicing it, but if you dont have acsess to this function then leave it plugged in, also get a new gasket, arroun £2 from dealers or TPS.
