I have just had my seat ibiza 1.6 sport, radio H/U refurbished through my local Seat dealer for £75 because it kept turning it's self on & off when ever it felt like it.
I know that this is a common problem as apparently a diode on the mother board is prone to failure.
any way my dealer gave me the box it got returned in from the repairer's but in his attempt to remove any lables giveing the information as to the repairer's details (so we can't go direct) he failed to remove some of the address, so after a few minuites searching i have found out who they are & have rang them & asked if they would refurbish other units direct with the owners rather than through a dealer & they have told me yes they would be happy to deal direct.
The cost is £47 inc VAT & return postage, quite a saveing from the £75 my dealer charged, all you have to do is contact them & make sure they can refurbish your H/U & post it to them, it took nearly 3 weeks to get mine back but they said they have been busy & they try to aim to get it back to you in 10 working days (subject to parts avalability)
I hope this helps anyone who has been told by there dealer they have to buy a new H/U at a cost of nearly £400

Addional Info Suppled by Heavertron,

The guy at GTS said it depends who you speak to whether they will accept the repair or not, as mentioned, they are downsizing, so have lost the contract with the courier, which means some of the engineers might not be willing to deal with all the trouble of return postage.

If you speak to them on the phone and have problems with them accepting the repair, the best bet is to:

1) Say that a friend got the service, can they check with a colleague,
2) Bribe them by offering £100 (they are a small company),
3) Enclose return postage packaging to make it easy for them to return the unit to you once repaired.

Great idea fo makeing it a sticky as it is quite a common fault & Seat UK don't repair them any more (how do you make it a sticky ?)

GTS don't just replace the faulty diode they check the whole unit ie: mother board / tape player / radio & if any other faults found they fix them, plus you get a warrenty for the repair.

Also discovered that when Seat did repair units, GTS were the authorised Seat UK repairer, so they know what they are doing.

hope this helps

Thanks cbr40017 for posting this info. I had my sister's HU out on the weekend, checked for dry joints, bad connections etc. but all to no avail. She's hoping to sell her Ibiza in the next month or so and it was going to be tricky to persuade someone to part with their money for a car with an ICE unit that switches off whenever it feels like it! The unit had also developed the fault whereby it switches to the CD changer whenever you hit the 'Band' button.

Anyway, spoke with a nice man at GTS this morning and have taken the main unit out, and boxed it up for shipping. He reckoned on a 3-5 working day turnaround at the moment. The good thing is, you ONLY have to send the main radio housing so you're not without a fascia panel for the repair period (although nothing works on it, and the ventilation blower stays on at one temperature as long as the ignition is on, but hey it's all in a good cause!)...

Thanks again for taking the time to post and helping to save others some money!

Mods. I reckon this is worth a sticky in the ICE section (not just the Mk 3 Ibiza section!), maybe along with this post as a first stop repair effort as it may work on different H/U's across the Seat range.

Thanks for agreeing that this is a good post Tuxy, & glade that they have been

able to help you out.

GrayT, they do all differant types of headunit repair ie: other that Seat,

i posted in the Mk3 ibiza section as it is quite a common problem with the

headunits that control the climate control that were fitted to the ibiza between

1999 & 2000

What ever headunit you have, be it factory fitted or after market it's only going

to cost anyone the cost of the phone call to see if they can help.

& yea i think a sticky would be a great idea so that any one in the future can

find out were to quickly & easly. how do you make it a sticky ?

May be worth PM'ing one of the Mods/Admins (not sure who looks after the ICE section?), obviously they would need to agree, but it's only them who can do it.

Edit: Ah, according to the list accessed via 'view forum leaders' at the foot of the home page the ICE forum moderator is Icecavern.

Thanks Zboyd.

cbr40017 could you edit your original post to change the Unit No. on the address to 36 rather than 35 as per post 12? That would probably help.

Cheers

H/U removal guide

Just made this guide up for the removal of the head unit

It is quite easy to do ......Just take it slowly so that you dont brake anything

Just click on the pic & it will open in another window & you can then click to enlarge.

GTS Intermedia - Highly recommended!

Just an update on my previous post for anyone thinking of shipping their problem 'Sound System' radio unit off to GTS Intermedia for repair/refurb.

Sent my sisters' radio unit off to GTS on Thursday 1st March by Royal Mail Special Delivery. The unit was returned by lunchtime on Tuesday 6th March (2 working days later!) via UPS and having re-installed the radio everything seems to work as good as new! The unit works for entire journeys now as opposed to switching off after a couple of minutes then refusing to stay on at all. The 'band' button also does what it's supposed to now instead of trying to control the auto-changer!

NOTE: I would recommend to anyone thinking of shipping thier unit to GTS, that they use Royal Mails' Special Delivery service as the cost includes £500 insurance (enough to replace with new, should it get lost/damaged) and it's guranteed for delivery by 1pm the next working day. It cost me £7.40 (approx 1.85kgs) and all the other methods either work out more expensive or don't include enough insurance (e.g. 1st Class, Standard Parcels, ParcelForce etc.)

Hope this helps and thanks again to CBR40017 for getting us the info on GTS.
:D

I sent my radio off to GTS after seeing the address etc on here. As the other guy said it got to them by special delivery and back to me within 2 days. Put back in but only worked for 24 hours then started to turn itself back on once switched off! Another call to GTS and sent back to them to re-do free of charge as the problem was still there. Got it back again yesterday and all seems well so far but to let everyone know that the service and communication is first class
