Thermostat Looks A Pig To Change! Am I Right?

I have a problem with my leon cupra taking ages to warm up to 90 degrees. I have had the temp sensor replaced with a nice shiny green one but problem still there. no faults on vag com at garage.

Done a little searchy and seems that there is a good chance thermostat is stuck open. ive found the diagrams of cooling system on here and it looks like its in the housing that the bottom rad pipe goes into, under the intake manifold/throttle body right next to the alternator.

I have two quick questions please if you can help

1: am i right is it where ive described/ and
2: looks a real bugger to get at. is it easier to drop off at garage and pick it up all done.

thanks hope someone can help or point me in the direction of a guide etc... many thanks.

ps i have used the search before you all start screaming at me.:)

Hi mitchy never really gets there tbh, only really gets to 75 ish degrees unless left on the drive for 15mins then as soon as you start driving it drops straight back down to between 0 and 60 normal driving. just found a wicked guide on audi world for changing thermostat so that will help if i do have to change it.

check it out if link works thanks

I'm Having this exact problem at the mo, takes ages to get up to 90, sometimes never gets there. then at times the temp will drop down to 70ish and slowly work its way back towards 90.

So would i be right in thinking its (typically) the sensor thats hard to get to i need to change, rather than this green one?

Cheers.

Hi dodge, when my temp sensor broke last time the temp reading was very erratic one minute 0 reading then the next minute 90 reading so you may find you are having thermostat problems as well seeing as though your sensor is working just taking a long time to heat up.
this is my own assumption and there are many more people on here who will prob correct me now. but hope this helps.

for reference the thermostat is located in the guide above and the temp sensor is located on the right hand side of the engine in one of the water pipes. there is a plug going down on the top of the sensor and it is held in the pipe by a horsshoe clip. these are a common fault and i believe the original sensors were black in color whereas the updated ones are green hope this helps.
