Right, Cordy SX MOT yesterday...
I have really looked after this car, fixed this, sorted that. Keeping an eye on everything inside and out. In otherwords, I know if its gonna fail on a "bulb"...
This time, they failed it on "no rear driver brake light" then aparently it "sprung" back to life so they passed it. Now, the garage offered to "fix" it for £70 with a new rear light cluster as they dont sell the bulb holder (the "culprit") seperatley (!?!) Im no idiot so if it needs fixing, I'll do it myself for pennies...
Why oh why do they always have to find SOMETHING!!!
There never was and still isnt a problem with it when I look at it!!
Also, I have less advisories than last year, yet I didnt fix anything listed (ok, apart from front top mounts and oil leak!!) how so? MOT regulated my :censored:
Rant over!

We have a local MOT garage that we use more for convenience than for trust. The guy only takes cash, which is already suspect in my books!

Anyway, every time we've had a car MOT'ed, the bill has always been a multiple of £40. New tyre, £40. Bit of welding, £80. Handbrake check and adjust, £40. New discs and pads, £160.

That last one I told him that I'd do it myself, the parts cost me, erm, £40. But me and the missus take bets on which multiple of £40 it will be. I have a feeling he even charges £40 for the MOT itself!

That 'needing new light cluster' is rubbish, at most it'll be a spring contact that just needs to be bent into shape or cleaned up.

My garage only takes cash, but the bloke works from his garage, next to his house so I can hassle him on Saturdays if he cocks it up (not that he ever has, sometimes i have to force him to take money off me!)

Just had my leon done at a local place. They are great. This time the exhaust bracket needed welding, the total cost including the MOT, £25.

We have a place close to us that I use for my MOT's. He literally ONLY does MOT's and therefore gives a fair assessment on what is OK to pass and what isn't because he doesn't get any return work or money out of failing cars.

I suggest you try finding somewhere like this :)

This is one subject that really gets me going! I hate the inconsistency of it all, basically there are some dodgy people always on the make and it does my head in. In my younger days I lived in Northern Ireland for a bit, you had to take your car to a govt run test center for MOT, although as you can imagine it was pretty strict at least they had no financial motives for failing you. I have used the same local garage for the past few years now and he`s spot on, always takes time to explain any advisories and for the sake of a bulb he just puts one in there and then. I would never ever use the likes of kwikfit etc for an MOT, you just know there after your hard earned!

agreed there seems to be some right cowboy's that will try anything but if you feel hard done by to any degree then there is always the appeal to go for.

I'm going to find me a simple MOT only garage who dont rely on return "repairs".
I have had this car 9 years and remember when it didnt need MOTing as it was less than 3 years old! Now I have to face the fact it is an "older" car, sniff! How time flies.

Are some MOT testers on a commission or something?

Oh and sods law, after passing its MOT with that annoyance, the day after I got a flat tyre!!
I swear its a conspiracy against me! I'd be paranoid if they werent already after me.

I always use the same garage now, they are a back street garage but there work is top class and they have a VW trained and Renault trained mechanic working there. On my last MOT I needed a couple of indicator bulbs changed as they were more red than orange and the one before that my headlights needed to be adjusted, so instead of failing it they just changed/fixed the problems. They said there was no point in failing it for a little thing like that when it was a 2 minute fix.

i once used a garage near me as a matter of covenience(turned out they take it somewhere else) and they failed her on one of the tyres and a couple of bulbs, yep the usual contact issue as i'd checked them all the previous day....bunch of cocks though refused to give me any more than 24hrs to sort the tyre and they couldn't get what i wanted(was running rainsport 1's at the time) so had to have an odd one on..i hate that!

aside from the fact i rang and was told she was off being retested so went down there expecting her to be back and it took another 1.5-2hrs for her to surface, with the grease monkey looking a little bit smiley..hmm!

I take mine to a VW specialist and theres a four week waiting time, which means they're only going to have it back if it genuinely needs something otherwise they have to shift work about,

Bulbs, head light adjustment etc they just do on the spot and dont fail it.
