So I am using an 18 year old, 3rd time round the clock car as a daily driver.
The last car was a mk2 golf GTD finally killed by rust at 23 years and 270,000 miles.
You see a theme here & as sometimes my yearly mileage has been over 30,000 miles,
the depreciation on a new car would just kill me.
The Seat Leon TDI has been a stunningly effective car, which simply, works.
(Just forgetting the tedious horrors of DIY cambelt changes, clutch swap & those bloody door locks.)
When the SEAT grim reaper turns up, scythe in hand, what do I replace it with?

I agree with the above.
Just buy a set of door solenoids, cambelt kit and clutch now and youll be ready for your next car.
Oh, and airbag relay.

Call me mad but I keep eyeing up Alhambras (although I’d be throwing a motorbike in the back and/or trailering a car to the track)

Jokes apart.
If it were me id be looking for any VAG car with the 19 pd lump in it. Low mileage and good history.
Dont like the later 2.0 diesel lump.
Personal opinion of course.

This is exactly my problem. Every single modern car I look at either has reliability issues or that when it comes to doing the most basic maintenance, it's pretty much an engine out job. The Leon has always had just the right mix of electronics to mechanical I'm comfortable with and I've never, ever had a major problem with it.

My only issue with the Leon is that I'd like it to pollute less, but then I looked up one of the recent Range Rover Discos today just for laughs and it's double the CO2/km of the 1.9tdi. OK, so it might have a DPF and all that nonsense, but seriously?

I do like how comfortable the interiors on modem cars are, but if they released the mk1 today with a nicer interior, I really don't think anyone would blink.

CO2 is pretty harmless compared to NOx and carcinagenic nanoparticles of soot. I know they are good in terms of economy, but IMO diesel engines should have stayed confined to commercial vehicles.

I'm wondering whether there's a market for converting older cars to better filtration - I was just the other day looking up retrofitting a DPF to the Leon, but there's not much out there and with my mileage it probably wouldn't do what it's supposed to. AdBlue would be even more complicated.

The mileage you do, i wouldn't imagine Rita Funbag would lose any sleep over it.
Well, I ought to take public transport.
Funnily enough, getting to various random construction sites, usually in the middle of nowhere for 7:30 am,
with theodolites, targets, sharp pointy tripods, computers, wet weather gear covered in sh1te and buckets of tools, is challenging.
Besides the stupid, ripoff prices, for buses here in Devon.
So, not happening.
Also living on the 300 foot contour, leaves a little wiggle room for sea level rise.

Diesel cars in cities are a problem. I used to have a Mk2 golf GTD with the intercooled 1600 turbodiesel SB engine.
It was the most polluting engine VW ever made & I never really cured its smoking habit.
The 1.9tdi ASV is a sweetheart in comparison. But as I live in the middle of Dartmoor, sheep and ponies are the most likely victims.
In the old days, cars spewed out nitrous oxides, Dartmoor drizzle washed these nitrogen compounds out of the air by the roads,
the grass grew greener alongside the road & livestock grazed in preference by the road.
The new greener exhausts have stopped this.
At night, herds of sheep still sleep on the nice warm tarmac,
black sheep are rare, as they always get run over.
A mate described the effect on his car floorpan thus...."like a cartoon mouse running under a carpet"

Battling a Lexus 2.5D dpf a few years ago, I can't say I am a fan.
