Get it to an independant? Confused to see how its so much :O may aswell go the whole hog with cams
I'm taking it to APS. They've done them before and replace everything related to the cam chain so know what they're doing. I was gonna ask a techie in work to do it, but he said it was an engine out job and 11.5 hours labour. + parts. APS have found a way of doing it without having to take the engine out. It's about £300 of parts and the rest in labour!
Basically, VW put a too bigger engine in a too smaller engine bay, there's no room to do anything so loads of labour and lots of pain.
I'd LOVE to go the whole hog with cams, but an extra £1300 for cams is a bit steep! For the 10/20bhp gain. I think my hybrid setup on the
Ibiza cost about £1500 and that doubled standard power and more than double standard torque! N/A tuning doesn't quite work out as good value for money. If only the R would double it's bhp for £1500
Thats some bad news about the cam chain/tensioner mate sounds pricey although if you can afford to run a V6 these days im sure its not too bad
Haha! Cheeky git! Wish I'd have known before I got the manifolds done, I'd have got the neccessities done before the goodies. But dont regret the manifolds by any means. It will mean that my bank balance will be in double figures for a month - but I'd rather get them done than crap my pants every time I drive the car....
Ouch!! How come your having to replace the cam chains, is there actually something wrong with yours? Thought they were meant to be good for life or at the very least well beyond 100k..
They are a common
problem on the 3.2 engines. Whether it be on the A3/TT/R32 etc. It's not the chains that go, it's the tensioners. So obviously when the tensioners go, slackens the chain and chain jumps off. There were a faulty batch of SACHS chains. And where SACHS had stamped the logo onto the link of the chain, it made the link weak and that link would break!
It can also be down to oil pressure or something like that. Some R32's gone with the "Long Life" servicing. Which is oil change every 20k. Luckily mine isn't on that, so shouldn't have suffered with the oil pressure problems, relating to the Long Life servicing.
Like I say, my chain tolerances are reading on the limit/just over the tolerance levels. And there is a
slight noise coming from the cam chain side of the block, so not gonna risk it! I wanna be able to give the R grief, especially now I've got the best soundtrack ever
Not potter around everywhere worrying that it's gonna go *ping* anytime. It's expensive, but in the grand scheme of things, isn't that bad.
