The car is reborn again......

Well after months of neglect and growing to hate the car i contemplated selling it, but deep down i knew that nothing would quite be as good as the little Cupra as an every day "sensible" car.

After buying all the bits and going to tackle the job myself i had a few problems and bit the bullet and dropped the car off at Jabba on Sunday.

What started off as a simple manifold change has kind of gone out of hand

new IHI manifold, downpipe and front pipe
new VF34 IHI turbo
new full set of Bill's uprated engine mounts
water injection being fitted
remapping to suit above

I am hoping the car will be massively transformed from what it was (and as Bill will confirm the car was a true weapon before with good spool up and pulling hard in the high revs) and now i've added a roller bearing turbo it should spool a bit better. Jabba say the map on mine is quite old and combined with new turbo, new downpipe and a remap on there new rollers should see a bit of a hike in torque and the WI will help in the summer too to keep temps down [B)]

Also having the suspension checked as its knocking a bit so may end up having new bushes and maybe new suspension.

Also in a few months am having the box uprated and rebuilt with a new diff and clutch and maybe some ARB's

Big thanks go to Jabba for being so helpful and helping me spend treble the money i wanted to :D :D and hopefully i'll have a big smile when i get the car back

Also big thanks to Bill for egging me on to spend lots of money - i told you i would end up spending lots of money, all i wanted was a sensible car  But honestly thanks for all your help with everything :D oh yeh you'll be glad to hear i have worn out the discs and carbon pads in 3000 miles  :D so i think we need to talk about brakes options sometime soon!!!

I will hopefully (finally) attend a midlands meeting sometime soon and show a few members what a true IHI car goes like.

I also need to get my wheels done matt black (my front wheels have been destroyed by the carbon pads and are permanently black and can't wash them :D )

Also i'm thinking of respraying the whole car a matt carbon colour so i don't have to wash the carbon brake dust off it ever again.........[:@]

Oh well it's all good fun  [B)]

When i phoned Jabba about my car they said your car/ the old demo car was in also. I am sure you will have fun when its all running healthy again. It looks like i will be collecting mine a week on Saturday. I think Mike said mine was getting a 3bar map sensor, n249 removed, and the mapping altered to run harder still. Should be fun.

Sounds nice Gary, i'm having quite a lot done, it appears the charge cooler may be not working properly so with that fixed i am hoping to have a huge grin on my face and a nice bhp and torque without pushing it to the limits.

I really want to compete with your top speed effort you did recently, however i have a close ration box on mine which limits my top speed to 150 :( but boy does it get there fast

I've been to the pub tonight and been having a few crazy thoughts so i've got to ring Elton in the morning and see what other magic can be worked so that i get the car back with everything completed and running perfect [B)]

Also i bet they told you how absolutely f*cked the manifold and exhaust housing was   :funk:

I think they said your Chargecooler pump was not working which will have killed performance.

They romp to 160mph anyway. I am sure you will notice a diff on its return mapping and the kits have moved on since your car was done.

hmmm, interested to see what happens with yours bill,i've been told the pe1820 was redesigned with a small compressor wheel on the new models(ie yours).I've also heard a bit of exhaust wheel clipping can work wonders.

Yes the manifold was well a bit worn

As for the wheels......well i have washed them quite a few times!!!! Also after the first time i left them a month a friend of mine spent 2 hours with some fancy acid style cleaner and couldn't even get them all clean properly :censored:

So i just haven't bothered to clean them since and it will never come off now lol

Will get them acid dipped and powder coated antracite in the future [B)]

Do you think the o2j box would really be more worthwhile though? (not sure what box i have in it now?

The close ratio box is really good although a bit annoying on the motorway but i don't want to lose accelration having the longer gears!?!?

Hmm decisions......i rang elton today and have told him to keep the car and get the box rebuilt and a diff fitted [B)] hmm or should i get the standard box back in........decisions decisions

closer rations so accelerates quicker

lower top speed though, about 147 on gps @ 8000rpm whereas i believe the standard box will get you about 175mph?

Also i think with the 8000 limit on std box you can get over 100mph in third, mine is topped out about 85 in third.

I know the older owner said just by swapping the gearboxes made the car noticeably quicker - so made quite a difference.

As i said only downsides are doing 100mph on the motorway is 5000rpm which is quite high and also top spped of 146......which is enough unless you want to go for big top speed runs.

Its nice to drive but it is very close ratios, and old owner sid that std box was nicer to drive.

Decisions decisions........Bill help!!

Ahh, cool. Dunno if i'd fancy 100mph at that revs for such a long time, but quick acceleration is cool

Cheers BlueR, i appreciate the reply.

 Hmmmm... clipping as in making the clearances bigger or port larger for more flow... and more lag.

balancing act as usual.

My current 02A 16v ibiza g'box is shorter geared than my 02J was, and yours is even shorter again. Like you say taller gearing less acceleration, but better top end cruising...

Difficult call... unless you mixed and matched some ratio's to have good 1-4 ratios for acceleration and tall 5th, like VR6 02A boxes have. (James @ Jabba's Mk2 Golf for example)

hmmm end of the day most races i have are won before 150mph plus if i have a box that can do 175+ then i will end up doing that

I think i'll stick with it to be honest, 5th gear is a bit annoying at times but nevermind, i might have a better car to go high speed cruising in (going back towards skyline again)
