Thatcham Nightmare

Hi there,

Does anyone know why the Leon immobiliser isn't thatcham accredited before May 2001? Or could it just be a mistake in the thatcham list? It's really annoying as I have a 2000/W Leon S and need a thatcham cat 1/2 immobiliser for some specialist insurance (not for the car itself, but for some equipment I need to transport).

The thatcham bible is here: http://www.thatcham.org/resources/pdfs/compliance.pdf

If it's not approved, what would be the cheapest way to "thatchamize" my car to this rating?

Many thanks (and for all the other fantastic info you guys post on this site).

i do not think its a mistake in the thatcham list as i know some early leons had aftermarket alarms fitted to achieve thatcham rating.

Do you require just the imobilisor to be thatcham or also the alarm?
There are plenty of thatcham imobilisors available for reasonable money.

my memory of the thatcham ratings is sketchy, but cat 1 is an approved alarm and immobilisor, and car 2 is just the immobilisor?

Thanks for the reply.

So does this mean that my car has a different security system to models bought a year or so later?

I'm pretty sure I only need the immobiliser. Yes cat 1 is alarm/immobiliser and cat 2 is immobiliser only.

It seem such a pain to have to fit one immobiliser in place of another. Especially as my car already has a fantastic anti-theft feature (a long scratch affecting at least 4 body panels on the passenger side)!

Any recommendations for a good immobiliser? Would I have to have a separate alarm fob or could it work using the existing ignition circuitry? I could possilby fit it myself.

if you fit it yourself it wont be thatcham approved; it has to installed by an approved installer and you get an installation certificate. (which you may need to show in the event of a claim).

you may be able to get one fitted in addition to the current system.
I had one fitted a few years ago for £150 which had a small transponder which you put on the key ring. Then literally forgot about it as you dont have to press anything, plug it in anywhere or even change the battery!
when you turned the key the ignition would activate the imoblisor to detect the transponder next to the ingition and if it was there it would start. (no delay or waiting).

just call a local fitter and say you want one that doesnt need plugging in etc. or suggest a transponder type.

Ok, that's good to know, and not quite as expensive as I thought it might be. I'll see who's available in my area to fit one.

Thanks for your help.

I'm based in the midlands, more specifically Leicester, Lichfield and Solihull are good locations for me. Someone mobile would be ideal. Any suggestions?
