Hi everyone,

Im in insurance and tax hell! Just got all the work done on my old golf and am ready to sell her (I need the cash to pay for the leon). Only problem is, the golf isnt insured, at the end of the week Im starting my new policy with Greenlight, and they dont offer short term insurance policies. Also the tax runs out at the end of the week and I need the golf insured to get the tax!:(

Does anyone know of any insurance companies who will insure for a month at a time?

Thankyou in advance everyone:)

when your greenlight policy has started ask greenlight for an 'additional car 'policy. they can do this for weeks or months... im sure that would allow you to tax in online as you dont produce a certificate, the system checks it has insurance? as greenlight again.

or:

insure the golf rather than new car... then when sold transfer policy to new car? (will cost a bit in admin)

or failing that you would have to take out an annual policy that allows you to pay monthly and then cancel it when no longer required. - would need to check if you can cancel withut penalty.

hold on, did you ask if they can do a short term policy period. or did you ask if they can do additional vehicles in addition to your annual?

there is a big difference.

explain your situation and say once you have taken out the annual can you add an additional car so you can tax / sell it.
it may well depend on individual circumstances, but i know they can offer this.

Day insure want £130 for 28 days, and £71 for 14 days, which isnt too bad. Ill ring greenlight tonight.

greenlight wouldn't insure over a 1.2 for a temporary period, might just be down to my age.

Also got quoted ridiculously high from tempcover.com.

Looks as if Day insure are the cheapest around.

Might be an idea to make sure you can tax the car on a 28 day policy.

I looked into this last weekend when I went to look at a car that had no tax or insurance.
I can't think which company it was (found it via google) but in their FAQ they state that to buy tax you need an annual policy.

I went with Swinton in the end as you can pick up your cover note from your local office and even if you pay in a lump sum they only charge £25 + pro rata + IPT if you cancel.
You'll find that all policies you buy online / over the phone are covered by the distance selling regulations which give you 14 days to change your mind.

I have used dayinsure when I collect the Golf, £21 for a day seems expensive but short term to get a car home was better than risking something happening to it!

You get to print you certificate too.
