Temperature Gauge diagnosis

Hi Guys

Ever since I bought my car in November, the temp gauge has been doing the typical fluctuation between 0-90'c so after some rigorous searching I originally came to the conclusion that the sender was fubarred.....

But I found a post last night that suggested loading up the diagnostics on the climatronic screen... I did this, loaded 51c to show the temp and noted that from cold it rose steadily to 90'c in about 15 minutes and then stayed there - 100% normal.... in the mean time the temp gauge on the dash board was going doo-lally-plonk and fluctuating between 80 and 90, and even stayed at 60 for ages too.

So whats the diagnosis would you say? I'm guessing if the climatronic screen runs off the same feed as the dash board gauge, it's the gauge playing up....

Any help would be realllyyyy appreciated :)

Sure I read some where that the sender has two circuits in it, one that feeds the ECU and one that feeds the dials, (hence 4 wires), sounds like just one half has failed. Any one else confirm this?

Thanks for the post mate

I can't feasibly think of any where else that the climate control feed get it's data from... it must be just part of the temp sender thats broke as you say.

I'm going for a remap on Sunday (woooooo SOOO excited!!) so we'll see if VAG-COM brings up any faults....

Anyone else have any comments? :)

Cheers mate.

On Sunday when I go for the remap I'm having the sender changed anyway which is cool.

If it was the sender at fault, would it definitely show up a fault code? I've seen somewhere that the fault comes up something like "fault in temperature circuit (could be stat or sender)" or something similar...

Is this always the case?

Cheers hairy thats some useful stuff :D

So basically I think if I replace the sender, it's more than likely gonna fix it then...I'll give that a go :p

Makes me wonder if the previous owner of the car decided to get rid of it just cos the temp gauge needs a good excorcising... the power of christ compels you... etc ;)
