no its nothing to do with the fan sensor, do you know what engine you have, normaly the sensor has 4 wires going to it, let us know the engine code and we can tell you for sure.

Hi I have the same problem with mine so would also be interested in any help you could offer...

Engine code is a AUD it's 1.4 16v 75bhp.

Changed the expansion tank bottle with no effect so far.

Thanks

Got a new sender today, gauge has now popped back into life.

Green one on the passenger side of the engine block, £30 inc VAT and an O ring from VW.

sorry i know this is off topic but where do you find the engine code on the 01 tdi cordie as cant find it on chassy plates etc.????
and big ste you need to change the coolant temperature sensor on the right hand end of the block. Its held into the thermostat housing at the back by a clip and can easily be removed.

Hi there had same probs with my vario.1.69( alm engine code).found the thermostat housing cover damaged internaly causing the stat to jam open and the temp guage to stay cold,Two 8mm headed self tapper bolts hold the cover in place with an o ring to seal it.
5min job&now she runs fine

To the OP it sounds like your thermostat. The housing can sometimes break leaving the stat permanently open. GSF do a stat and housing for around the 15 quid mark. If you look up my previous post I had the exact same problem and by the looks of it we;'re not alone. It's pretty common.
