I have done just over 18k in my TDI now and it is absolutly beautiful.. In the early days I was giving it some stick in an attempt of breaking in, which sometimes meant I got my DPF light illuminated. I would sometimes use Slik 50 detergent at £11 a pop every 4-5000 miles which did cause some difference to the power.
Now that the mileage as piled on I have been a bit more thoughtful to the TDI 170 beast, and decided to look after it more now that it has got past the worst of its breaking in beating. I have started using Millers fuel additive which you can grab for £11 (incl postage) off ebay and treat 4-5 tanks of fuel. I also if possible try and feed it the odd tank or half of Ultimate, since both ideas runs a higher cetane through the injectors and cleans them with the detergent agent. Since going by this the response has been amazing mainly owing to the higher cetane value but also my economy is improving. I also treat the oil to Wynns Supercharged Oil treatment, it tops up your present oil with a thick viscosity formula which helps clean deposits that build up inside the engine and maintain compression, (vital for a diesel) this also works a treat. I have noticed week by week my diesel not only sounds a lot better than it did before, it is so much more responsive and the economy is fantastic. Also my DPF light hasn't come on for ages.
I did an experiment and smashed the factory printed economy figures. Round the town, which includes two school runs, shopping, and usual suburban traffic, I was clocking on average 39.7mpg which is no where near what I was clocking the last time I tried before my super TDI diet, which was averaging around 35-36.6mpg.
My engine now runs a lot quieter, smoother, much more responsive and to bag it all far more economical. Turbo lag is cut right down, since the responsiveness pushes cleaner/quicker exhaust gases into the turbine meaning you get better use from the system. Give it a try it's reasonably inexpensive when done right and also it will maintain an extended life for the car.
