Query about the oil in a TDi FR....

How often will this need topping up ???

Only ask as 2 of my managers at work have Audi A4 170TDI's (same engine I believe) and both have had oil lights come on between 3000 and 3500 miles... and 1 has had it again at just under 7000.. Seems a bit thirsty on the oil if it needs topping up every 3500 miles, is this going to be the same in the FR Leon??

Correct me if I'm wrong but the oil light doesn't necessarily mean the oil needs topping up.

By the way, I've put a litre of the stuff in mine over the first 10k miles.

Mine has 7k miles on it but when I bought it last week it was serviced so I should hope that the oil is fine. However, just so I know, how much oil is there between the min and max on the dip stick? Is it 1L?

Also, its the oil light reliable? i.e. is it ok to leave the oil until the light comes on? With my civic, I've heard loads of stories about the oil running about which destroyed the engine, but with no light. I do realise it's best to check regularly but just wondered if the light on the Leon is more sophisticated like a regular fuel gauge?

I read on the TDI section, that the oil light comes on when you're below the low mark. So I imagine you may do some damage if you go that low!

Also, mine has used half a litre in 5000 miles.

you should be checking the oil every thousand miles other wise youll end up with big problems

one of the In-Laws has an A6 and when he picked up the car he was given a bottle of oil and told that the light comes on when it gets slightly low instead of the usual dangerously low so it might just be an Audi thing with the light but i think generally they are greedy on oil

My 2.0 TDI Sport has used half a litre after 7500 miles. So dont forget to check at regular intervals.
