TDI EGR Valve disable

A question for all of you TDI experts, my query concerns the pre PD engines. I have for years now, on two Rover 2.o DI engines and this my 110TDI disabled the EGR valve by disconnecting the electrical connection to the solenoid. On all of these engines it has shown a slight immediate improvement and better "smoke test " readings (UK yearly test) and of course no chance of EGR problems, because it remains shut and unused. The reason I have always taken this action is that years ago when Diesel Car Magazine was for real Diesel Divers and dealt with real problems (Now it deals mainly in how to get the best price on your New Audi A8 Diesel - Yeah like we can all afford one of those) An expert back then sugested that the EGR valve is just a sop to tree huggers it doesn,t remove smoke, in fact it makes more, but it does remove some Nox or other component of the exhaust. So Definitive answer please, have I always done right by switching the damn thing off? bearing in mind that since I have done so my "smoke " tests keep getting better, ie: lower readings each year. (My question was mainly triggered by an article in Car Mechanics magazine which said the only effective way to shut it off is to make up a blanking plate. To my mind excessive, if its shut and has no electical trigger for the solenoid it is shut ENDE.)

Indeed. I've seen some shocking intake pictures over on TDIclub, and my pd100 one was pretty gunked up after only 60k miles. Even my current intake was greasy after just 7k, but it was cleaned up and should still be shiny now with no EGR work happening at all. [B)]

EGR disabling is probably one of the most common mods done on here. I blocked the vacuum control pipe on my Ibiza's engine, and have done on the Passat.
(I think on later PDs - 03 or 04 onwards - this might flag up a warning because the MAF sees more fresh air being taken in than it expects, not sure....might be OK if it's turned down in vag-com too).

PS Also an ex Diesel Car reader :)

i disabled somebody's at the weekend. worth doing imo

thanks flash took it into seat today cos of the pipes leaking and damage, the result awesome where it boosted at 3500-4000 it now holds it till 4500 and from 2000+

the EGR mod is well worth it it is much smoother pick up from 1000+ and more responsive!

just turn it down via vag-com i'll post the details later.

the egr valve is at back of engine and has a spaceship silver top ;)

its the valve under the big silver cap at the back left of the engine.

whats best to do with it - bung up the vac pipe as mentioned before or turn it down to the min with vag com, both been covered before, a search for EGR on the tdi sections will yeild good results.

Cheers dude!

Just had a quick read through exisiting posts... Seems like a worthwhile 'mod'. I've got a 115 PD - is it worth replacing the MAF / N75 valve too?

Thanks for the advice.

1. With the engine warmed up and running at idle in neutral and all accessories turned off (air conditioning radio etc)

2. Connect the scan tool cable and start upthe software.

3. select Engine Control module

4. Login in as 12233 (as access code)

5. Select "Adaptation" and go to block 3

6. Give accelerator a quick blip to open Egr Valve. should show 250mg/stroke (give -/+ 20mg)

7. The default number is 32768 change value to 33768

8. Select "test"

9. should change to about 350-370mg/stroke!

10. unplug, have a drive!

It is really simple, 2mins to do :)
