tdi black smoke pipe off

hi everyone i've just bought a leon cupra fr 150bhp diesel. i gots a problem already, the pipe from the turbo blew off and black smoke went everywhere, this is a problem easily resolved however at the turbo end of this pipe the attachment has been modified. someone has bolted a piece of stainless tubing onto the turbo and jubilee clipped the rubber pipe on.

has anyone got any ideas why they would do this??

im really stuck for ideas as the new pipe ive got won't fit on!!

also i noticed earlier that the egr valve has been completely removed, i'm stuck for answers can anyone help??

cheers stu

removing the egr valve can promote an increase in engine power. THe EGR takes exhaust gasses coming out the engine and puts them into the air inlet of the engine to allow them to be burnt again. Its for emissions control.

Perhaps the odd piping around the turbo has something to do with this mod.

Try the model specific forums as people there will know more about these mods.

thanks

ok thanks for the advice!

do you think putting the egr valve back on will make the car considerably slower or not?? would it not be easier to get a re-map rather than remove parts of the car??

Another reason the egr is sometimes removed is because the sooty exhaust gasses going back through the inlet can combine with the oily gasses that are also being put through the inlet from the crank case vent. When these two nasty gasses mix they have a habit of coating the inlet manifold and egr in thick oily gunk several mm thick. This can evenually lead to problems and needs to be cleaned out, not a nice job!!! I'm in the middle of doing this at the moment.

does this mean the car won't run??

how would i clean it out if this happened??

The cleaning Method I'm using involves lots of water, degreaser and tooth brushes. I wouldn't worry about it too much though, my car has done quite alot of miles. I would say that if your egr has been removed and mapped out then leave it off, worth seeing if the ccv mod has been done too, if not it might be worth getting a catch can and doing the mod. Then all that will be going through the intake will be clean air which has to be a good thing.

I think the power gain is very small, some places ive read that you wont notice it.

Also, its easy to disable but leave in place just by removing a vaccum hose, control cable.. etc.

I think its more likley it went wrong or needed work done it as funkmonkey said and to save the cost, its been removed.

if the valve has been removed, have the pipes where it was been capped off? whilst ive not looked at one recently in situ, im thinking that if its remved there will be a pair of pipes which are not connected to anything.

The only negative impact i can think of is the emissions test when a service/mot is carried out. It may fail because of this, but i cant say for certain.

One other negative is the heater may take longer to warm up... ive seen the coolant diagram of my Mk2 Leon 2.0TDI (im thinking they will all be similar) and there is a warm (not hot) flow from the engine block taken through the EGR heat exchanger then to the heater matrix, then back to the engine block. If there is no EGR gasses flowing thoruhg the heat exchanger, the water going to the heater matrix wont get the benefit of the extra heat.

EGR removal will not affect the MOT. EGR is about reducing NOx formation, which is not MOT-testable. In fact, the only pollution test on diesels at the moment is smoke, and that's a "rev it up and watch the exhaust" test, not a measured one.

NOx reduction by EGR actually increases the smoke and particulate formation, so eliminating EGR improves your MOT performance. NOx is a Californian bugbear, labelled an ozone-depleter, but the evidence is not conclusive.

Warm-up time shouldn't be affected much, diesels take longer to warm up anyway as they are more efficient. Not all systems cool the EGR.

If EGR and crankcase ventilation are left as standard, over time the oily crankcase vent vapours combine with the hot sooty exhaust to form a sludge which gets baked on to the inlet manifold and EGR valve. The manifold is gradually choked and the EGR valve eventually starts to stick part-open, causing overboost and limp mode.

as ive just purchased the car the garage have kindly offered to replace all the piping which the clips have broken on and have also offered to replace the EGR valve for free. do you think thats a good idea or should i just tell them to do the piping? Once again thanks for all your help guys.

Without a doubt, I'd get them to put it all back on as it should be, but ask to keep the parts they take off. At least then you have all the bits you need to put it back to "standard" if the urge so takes you. I have kept mine in place because the difference is not huge and after 75k miles it is still reasonably clean. You might even be able to sell the nice new bits to someone on here that doesn't want to spend the time cleaning theirs!

A photo of the engine in the EGR area would be handy for people to see what has been done and you might get some more definitive advice.
