Suspension / Steering screech (top mount?)

Hi all,

Happy new year to you all...

Im having a problem since having my suspension strut re-attached due to a stripped bolt. The strut is now firmly attached with all 3 bolts again (yay) but something is screeching loudly when i turn the steering wheel:

  1. Its metal on metal and very high pitched (like a nail on a blackboard - eeek!) - sounds like its coming from the actual steering wheel but its coming from the o/s suspension strut and is loud outside the car.
  2. It only happens if the car is moving
  3. It usually happens when the wheel is in the neutral position and being moved to the right - i.e. when you turn a corner left and are lining up again, or when your entering a junction on your right.
  4. You can also hear the occasional squeak when going over a rough surface (when the wheels are slightly moved from neutral i assume)

Does anyone have any idea what it could be or how to fix it easily? Could it be some kind of gasket on the top mount missing/dislodged? Could something as simple as oil fix it? Please help - it doing my nut!

Thanks! Ed

As techie said I'd suspect the top mount. You didn't have it done at Autoworld Chesterfield did you ? When they reassembled my struts they forgot to fit the top bearings...!

Might also be that the spring hasn't been seated properly, and is turning in the lower platform when you are steering...
