Suspect dodgy slip ring and other gremlins

Hi all,

Got a new (to me) 57 plate Seat Altea XL Stylance 5P (1K0) with a few 'gremlins'. VIN no is VSSZZZ5PZ8R0xxxxx

Got it at a reasonable price so don't mind doing a few bits, or spending a little bit of money if required...

The first (and most serious as far as safety and MOT is concerned) is that the horn doesn't work. Add to this the MFSW buttons don't work. I knew about this when I got the car, and had an idea of what it will be...
So, checked the fuses and they're all good. I reckon the person who had the car before me knew about this problem too as they have wired in a little button for the horn on the panel for the fuse box (internal)! S/he did an awesome job too  - would this get me through an MOT?!

Ran a diagnostic and got the following code:

Address 16: Steering wheel Labels: 1K0-953-549-MY8.lbl
Part No SW: 1K0 953 549 AQ HW: 1K0 953 549 AQ
Component: J0527 636 0070
Coding: 0002042
Shop #: WSC 04941 785 00200
VCID: 8109E38FD8FC51161BD-80D4

1 Fault Found:
01426 - Controls in Steering Wheel (E221)
004 - No Signal/Communication

Armed with all this info I have a sneaky suspicion that it will be the slip ring that needs to be swapped out, so here goes the questions (please chip in if you have any other ideas)

- When I swap the slip ring out, do I need to reprogram anything? If so what and how?
- Has anyone used the cheap ones available on ebay? If yes, are they any good, or should I stick to an OEM one?
- I don't think it's clever to use a used one - do they have a working life span or is it just pot luck?
- Why don't eggs bounce?
- I don't think it will be the steering wheel control module as the cruise control still works and I think that this module is responsible for cruise control and the on board computer as well. Please advise...
- How would I know if the previous owner attempted to 'fix' the steering wheel controls in the past?
- This is the cheap slip ring I'm talking about - is it okay, and is it the correct one for my shed? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A3-S...792313?hash=item4d31c9d3b9:g:scEAAOSwPgxVSi71
- The ride scrapes every I time I go over a speed bump when her mother and sister are in the back - why is this?

I have other problems that I will address as and when I have the time - including (brief details here!) a door control module (any guides for removing the door card would be appreciated, I believe its a pig of a job) and the reverse bleepers not bleeping. After it is free(ish) of gremlins I will start looking at upgrading the Head Unit and then the poor speakers...

Thanks for reading my ramblings, and even more thanks to those who give me some advice!

Bryan!

Sounds like your having fun there, nothing like a project to get you familiar with the car! I can't answer the problems but if I get a bit lively on the bumps I catch the front under tray on the floor the other side.

A quick google on other vag forums and it looks like it could be the Steering Wheel Control Module.

Check your corresponding fuses as well... if you are lucky it will be one of them!

I kind of preempted your response when I wrote my original post...

So, checked the fuses and they're all good.

But thanks anyway SeatJay - you have been a great help on another post where you directed me to a bloke called dave in the dealers section. Unfortunately not so great here - maybe this little 'bump' might get me an answer or two?
