strange noise?

Hi guys, i have a 115 auto o5 plate bammer that started getting a rumbling noise more noticable at cruising speeds but getting worse now, hearing it at all speeds. Its sounding like an old bus at the moment,engine is fine i think it sounds more like the running gear but dont know where to start looking lol. Any ideas appreciated.

Hi

Favourite point to look for a grumbling type noise when the car is on the move would be the drop links on the front suspension. These can make all manner of knocks and clonks when on the way out.
Simple rememdy is to change them both, they are not expensive and are an easy replacement.

Another favourite fail point would be one of the drive shaft joints.

Cheers, i'll check the drive shaft joints as there is no knocking or anything like that.

Possible wheel bearing or aged swelled tyres? both can cause a low pitched rumbling noise. Or the half shaft bearing - only visable with the undertray removed.

Hopefully the tyre is the culprit as 1 of the fronts is done. i'll get it changed and see if that solves it.

Finally got it into garage and wheel bearing was on its way out. so i'm a £140 lighter but no noise anymore.

Ah shame i got here late, i was going to say check the bearings, i know a few ways of telling which one has gone... ive changed a couple lately, front and rear

First check the drive shaft if it is ok then check the bearings.

I am confident the problem is present in this area.

Ok so I know my car is a measley Arosa but, Im having a similar issue. Not getting much joy in the arosa section. I know my wheel bearings and bumpstops need replacing but, I cant imagine they would be making the racket of a noise that is coming from my car.

Can you try to describe the noise and rough location that you heard it coming from whilst inside the car for me please ?!

I have to go to Brands Hatch this weekend and am hoping to take the wee green beastie.

It was coming from the o/s/f from what i could tell, and it was a constant noise getting louder with speed. It sounded sort of metally(if that is a word lol) like a groan. according to garage it was only starting to go, they reckoned i would still have a wee while without replacing it if i wasnt doing any long journeys. there was no play in the wheel, they had to do some check on the ramps to verify it was the bearing. But all is good now and i can roll down the road without fearing the wheel falling off lol

Hi,

I have an Alhambra and its making a dull droning sound over 25mph and gets progressively louder, when i got around a left hander it shuts up, go round a right hander and it stays the same.

Im sure its at the front as ive sat in the boot (me not driving lol ) and it not as loud so ive concluded its a bearing at the front.

Ive checked for play in the wheel, but it seems fine, are there two bearings in the strut?

Also i reckon it could be the bearing that holds the drive shaft that goes into the diff, oh and can the diff oil be topped up?

Would really appreciate some advice on this, as im a bit strapped for cash and ive got to go to France next saturday in it, should be fun.

Mine had no play in the wheel either, it was only just worn but really noisy. didnt notice it going on left or right turns but it was a progressively louder drone. If you can change the bearing yourself, they are around £30 from eurocarparts.

Sorry to jump on the thread, but it does sound like you have just fixed a problem that my Toledo has got. Its a bearing noise, that more or less starts at 0mph and carries on getting louder throughout the speed range. The one thing that I don't understand though is that there is no play in any of the wheels, and the noise doesn't change when I'm cornering. Previous cars have a notable change in volume when cornering, and when my Golf had one failing, there was a definite 'click' as I moved the wheel.

How did you determine which side it was on, and whether it was the front or rear? I'm pretty sure I can do the bearing myself, I just don't want to do all four if I don't have to!

You could tell roughly what side it was on mine but was confirmed on ramp.

My Toledo has a similar problem. Around 6 months ago I hit a kerb and flattened a tyre with no other obvious damage. Replaced the tyre and had no more problems. Until recently.

The noise is noticeable at low revs and is worst between 3000-4000 revs when cruising on the motorway. It is also there on decelerating. The exhaust has been checked and is ok. The front wheel bearings were identified as the cause and have been replaced. But the noise is still there.

I've been advised that some bearings in the gearbox differential could be the problem, but this will set me back the best part of £600. The driveshaft has been removed from the list as it has no play.
Naturally given the other solutions didn't work I'm not too keen on going through a trial and error methodology at the expense of my bank account. Is there anything else that it could be?
