it sounds like a grinding noise
definitly coming from the engine.

the car passed mot last month ( but i know that dont mean nothing lol )

aswell as that just when its ticking over, doesnt seem to be the healthiest of noises-somfing like a rattling is going on

need a new starter motor to fix it, dont no the price. Its not gonna brake down and could last for years doing that not a massive issue just up to you if you want to put up with it.

Double check tho, it happens straight after you started the car and lasts couple of seconds

I agree, my starter motor went on my 1.4 makes a horrid grind noise. Typical on a cold mornings and was always intermittent! If you have a kwik-fit near you they cost a fair bit to start with (around £130) but if you return your old one after fitting the new one you get £50-£70 back for it. They deal with refurbished units, which isn't a bad thing!

the rattling noise your talking about from the engine is just the noise all the 1.4's make, the amount of posts saying "MK3 ibiza sounds like a diesel...help!!" that are about is testimony to this. It really threw me at first too.
Good luck with the starter motor too.

razor was this deff the starter motor? i have the grinding noise also but only on cold mornings!

Ive got a squeeling noise from the starter every time it starts on my mrk4, any ideas of replacement price?, i was told its not disengaging properly? can u shed sum light on it guys

I'm not sure on SEATs but on my old car you could buy some time with a cheap fix by coating the bendix in oil as it's normally water ingress that makes them whine. It normally only serves as a short term fix though.
