Strange Connection Issue

I bought a usb OBD2 cable from ebay (i know, i know...) and am having slight issues.

It was supplied with all the drivers needed to do usb -> seriel which i installed. Booted up shareware of vag-com 409 and went to the options screen. Tested all the COM ports, and it found it (or says it found it) on com3. Did an LED test and it said everything was fine (not sure what this actually does as nothing lit up, is this just for genuine cables or am i being thick?)

So, went out to the car (2001 lupo sport) and plugged the cable in to the obd port. The interface then lit up so i assume this means it's connected.

Fired up vag-com again, made sure it was still on com3, then started doing the autoscan. It opened each module in turn and tried to connect to it. It tried to connect 4 times, but each time it failled. So then i went through the modules manually to see if it would connect at all, no joy.

So, what am i doing wrong? Is it likely that i'd have more success if i tried an earlier version of vag-com? This is mentioned on their site. Something about opto iso or something... have to be honest, don't know what that means. Just confused as it seems to talk to it in the set up, and the cable was sold as being 409 compatible.

Any help would be massively appriciated. :)

i checked all 4 com ports and the usb port. The only one that it accepted was com3, but that's a really good point. I think it's got a modem built in, so i guess it might be seeing that instead.

Will check when i get in tonight.

If it is the modem it's seeing and not the cable, can i force the usb -> seriel on to com 1-4?

I hadf exactly the same problem mate, if you go to your device manaher in your pc you will find that the cable hasnt actually installed. You have to do it manually, there is an option to add new hardware or somthing like that then you can check on device manager again to see if it intastalled, mine did the same with COM3 saying it was ok and it didnt work. I ended up using COM4 for mine
