Stong fuel smell, low MPG.... help!

Hi,
I have owned my Toledo for about a year or so now, and it has always had a fairly low MPG and is gradually smelling stronger of unburnt fuel.

The smell of fuel is much stronger when I first start the engine, but many of us have had a look, and have seen no sign of a fuel leak.
It has been in for an MOT and other things in this time, and no comments from the mechanics.
On its last MOT, the sensor on the exhaust, just in front of the CAT was replaced, as the cable had burnt through. I was told that this would probably solve the consumption problem, but it hasnt.

It is currently doing just 300 miles per tank (approx 55L), and has been for a long time.

I noticed the other day, that the plastic pipe between what I think is the clutch servo and the engine was split, so have tried to repair that as best as possible.

Other than that, on the top of the engine, towards the back, there seems to be a sound of a sharp air intake everytime the engine is revved. Is this normal?

I would appreciate any help and advice anyone could give!!

Thank you!

My mate had a simialr problem on a mondeo, I had a good look at it and found one or the diesel injectors was leaking over the top of the block. Thus creating the smell and giving crap MPG. You don't state petrol or diesel though in your post.

Hi
Sorry, its a 1.8 20V Petrol.
Have fixed the cracked hose, but the smell is still there and strong.
Not sure on the last service, but certainly not within the last 12-18 months.

Check all your injector lines make sure all connected and seated properly etc. You could also check fuel filter lines as well make sure that is all connected properly and not perished etc (not sure where it is though on there cars). you are going to have to eliminate one thing at a time I'm afraid.
