Bear with me but I am right in saying that when the car reaches operating temp it then switches over to lambda (Oxygen sensor) control?

well thats what i thought so i changed the lambda. made no difference. Apart for the ECU is there anything that controls the lambda??????

Try unplugging the wires from the lambda so that the ecu uses a default map rather that relying on lambda signal.
I did this on my 106 GTI which had two lambdas to figure out which was faulty.
Did you use a genuine lambda?

in was a bosch replacement which was the same as the one that came out. theres only one as well. I got the fault codes checked and the readings were fine...... I think your (we) are on the right track but don`t why its still doing it....

Have you actually checked the readings of the Lambda sensor? There is a test you can do I will try to find more info.

Info on Lambda sensors

http://www.picotech.com/auto/lambda_sensor.html
http://www.lambdasensor.com/main/mtesting.htm
http://www.autohausaz.com/html/emissions-oxygen_sensors.html

I now how annoying (and expensive) it is when a fault cannot be found.
Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem on my 106, when the car reached operating temp it would suddenly sound like it only had 2 cylinders and would struggle to do 40mph. Anyway if I stopped the car, crawled underneath and unplugged the wires for Lambda number 2 it ran fine, albeit with a fault light. Fitted a new Lambda sensor and reset the ECU and it was fine.

Just been reading my haynes manual but it doesn't give a specific wiring diagram for the digifant injection system as should be fitted to your car. Hopefully below is similar.

On the Bosch Motronic system the lambda sensor has 4 wires.

1. The positive wire runs from the battery, through the fuel pump relay, through fuse 18 and then to pin 1 on lambda. Wire is red and white.
2. The earth wire runs from a chassis point to pin 2 on lambda. Wire is brown and black.
3. Then the other two wires, the signal wires run straight to the ECU. The colours should be white for one and the other is Yellow. White to pin 38 on ECU and Yellow to Pin 15 on the ECU.

I should check the all the wires for continuity and also check the output voltage of the signal whilst the engine is running as detailed in the earlier links.
