starting vag com for first time problems

got my cable today and set about setting it all up and checking for fault codes. when i went to select which com to use ( 4 was only one that said would work) selected this and tested it. went to do some fault checking and selected the chassis and ran the fault check, then a message came up saying interface not ready with possible reasons why they were the following
ignition not turned on (not this as it was on)
cable not pluged in ( was plugged in so not this)
k line not open
and com not selected (already selected this in the options page)

so im not sure why its not working and help would be greast on this thanx gaz

its an aftermarket one but it could be the laptop im using ? as its pretty old

is it a serial cable , you sure the port you have selected in vagcom matches the one assigned to the port , ( see device manager) com port tab

yes its a serial port one very basic laptop is that in vag com or in the laptop its self?

ive got version 311.2n is at the top of the page ive got it on my house computer as well and it comes up with the same message as my laptop without the lead being in my house computer!

ive not had the cable in the home computer it comes up with the same message so looks like my laptop is not noticing there is a cable attached to it

It may be worth the try to get the desktop near the car so you can test the cable there. Then you will know for sure that the cable works. Other suggestion would be to borrow another laptop to test your cable.

There have been many who have been burned by buying the aftermarket cables. I hope you are not one of them.

it looks like my laptop is pretty poor and cant select the correct port will try it on another laptop i think to make sure cable is correct and working
