im not too sure mate but go to a scrappers and get one, i need to get one too either that or get mine reconed which would be prob around 50 quid to get done i beleive.

whats happened to yours? i would take a guess at the solenoid has give up

i do beleive the 16v starter is part of the front engine mount so i dont think they are the same.

as for doing it your self im not sure as i have an 8 valve 1.6 and mins on theback lol jus difficult to see where all the nuts are.

its probably specific to the O2O gearbox, probably going to get lucky with mk3 golf 8v's . if it was me id take it off, strip it down give it a clean.

if not go to any motor factors/parts suppliers and they will give you an exchange unit might even get a little bit of warrenty. better than one off a scraper you probably wont be able to test nor trust. Innit

EDIT

to remove, disconnect the battery, undo a nut on the back of the starter and remove the main power feed, probably a 13mm.
then there should be a little feed wire to the solinoid held with a 10 or 8mm?
support the engine and remove the 2 bolts. and remove
( pretty sure the starter bolts run through the front engine mount hence support the engine )
