Starter Motor Problem Mk3 Ibiza

ibiza owner

IBIZA Mk3 1.0Ltr MPi
Recently doing a bit of work on my engine I had to take out the starter motor on my Mk3 IBIZA and whilst it was out I was surprised how 'dry' and rusty the shaft and cog looked inside (where it makes contact with the crankshaft ring) so i though I know I will give it a nice coating with spray on grease.

Put everything all back started the car up and it started lovely, a lot quieter - I suppose it would do seeing as I put some grease on it.

However I left the car standing a couple of days (it snowed) then I went to start the car up and the starter motor sounded like it was whizzing around quickly but was not turning over the engine at all. It sounded like the cog was not coming out and making contact with the crankshaft ring.

I tried getting a hammer to it and tapping the end of the starter motor whilst the wife was in the car turning over the engine with the ignition key and on the first tap it started the engine.

What I am wondering is that should I now take every thing all apart again (grrrrr) and take the starter motor off and clean all the grease off I applied or is there any other ideas or will it just eventually sort itself out do you reckon?

Thanks,

Andy.

that's normally a sign of a starter on the way out if you have to belt it...

but it could just be you'd not located the cogs right.

Thanks. Do you reckon the inertia cog on the starter motor has to be correctly lined up with the crankshaft large cog ring before the starter motor is refitted then? - I wasn't aware of this. I was just thinking maybe that the grease I applied to the starter motor shaft was affecting the inertia of it maybe sticking rather than shooting out to engage to turn over the engine as it should.
