Starter motor/gearbox????

Had my car in at the garage as it wont start and they say its the starter motor.
But they are saying that the gearbox/bushing also needs replaced at the same time?? :wtf:
The car can be pushed started and runs fine once started.

Had a look online at starter motors and seen one where it says:

[1.4i 1994>> 4 (2)---Without Nose Cone---Replace G/box Bush!!]

So can the starter be replaced without the gearbox/bushing???

what symptoms i had something similar on mine, the lights came on but didnt turn over or even try, i replaced the starter motor on there request and it turned out to be the ignition switch, could always check by connecting the starter to your battery and see if it turns

not sure but hopefully on the same side and area as a cupra which is front right hand side at the bottom as you look at the engine from the front of the car, mine had that very symptom i would check your starter to see if it turns connect a wire from your battery to the starter and touch it on the battery see if it turns the starter then youll know for sure if the motors gone as there not that cheap to replace, and most are exchange only

Starter motor is at the back of the gearbox to the left of it by the downpipe. Think its only 3 bolts to get it off aswel. I went through 3 gearboxs in 2 years on my 1.4s and the guy at the dealers said they are very week on them models

there should be a electrical point on front of starter, i just undid that and then connected a wire to the plug, then tapped it onto the battery youll hear it turn over obviously, its just a test to see if your getting power to the starter then you can rule out either the starter or ignition,

Yes starter motor can be got to from the top quite easily. Only need to remove the airbox/engine cover for a bit more room.

Oh an gearbox should be around £200 delivered from a breakers yard, very easy to fit yourself or about £200 for a garage to put it in for you
