standard air box and filter or induction unit?which is best

I fitted myself a Pipercross induction unit a few months ago but have been reading various articles where people slate them, unless they have a cold air feed.

Not sure if it's psychological but I think I noticed a dip in power, especially in the summer.

Anyone have any examples on whether this is true. I may re-fit my old airbox if so.

My car came with a piper x induction kit. I love the noise it makes. Been told that you get better mpg with the standard box but have never had one fitted so can't say.

There was a thread afew months ago but didn't really conclude as to which was better.

I thought that the general consensus was that a cone kit gives a better noise;
the standard airbox with a dedicated cold air feed was the better 'power' wise;
and a drilled standard airbox gives a compromise between the two.

A cold air feed is not necessary, you wont notice much difference if you fit one. Especially in an 8 valve Ibiza :p

To be honest John I think you may be right. I know a friend who had some custom downpipes fitted to his car recently and paid over £250 for them!

The people who did it for him said it would make a real difference in sound and bhp but his car now sounds like a bag of loose spanners being flung about in a big plastic bag!

If spending that kind of money gets you nothing, how can a £80 induction do anything. :p:p

oh thats quite strange, Iv heard new downpipes increase torque no end, due to less restriction in the downpipe, producing a more free flow of exhaust gasses, also they will sound a lot sweeter :D I know a lad in the next village who owns an ibiza 8v, its a discrace really as he never looks after it and leaves it to rust. wont even buy it a new exhaust as the old one is rotting and looks like a peashooter, also hes scared of putting on lowering springs as he's been told it makes the ride too bumpy and prefers the look of an ibiza on stilts :lol: then he tells me he's thinking of trading his ibiza in for a fiesta. the guy obviously needs help!

I think I know that guy with the Ibiza. The way you describe him sounds like a different person though! I hear he as front and rear strutbraces and also a front lower strutbrace. The guy seems to be implementing some very sensible and beneficial mods me thinks!:p

I hear he is also having stainless steel brake hoses fitted to his car next week to enhance his brakeing performance!:p

Not sure about this guy with the custom downpipes though. When the mechanic said it would increase torque, what he mean't was everyone in the car will have to increase 'their talk' to try and flush out all the 'spanner' noise.:funk::funk:

As for all this emmission gas business, sounds like the person who bought these pipes must have been sniffing gas themselves to buy such a waste of space product!:lol::funk:

Still, at least they can see their face in them, being shiny, of course.:headhurt:

I'd disagree with this comment. It might be difficult to notice a difference, but the standard airfeed, fed from behind the drivers side headlight, and passing through a cone, is restrictive. For the sake of £5 worth of flexi-piping, it's well worth doing and it's better than other mods which just suck hot air from the engine bay into the system.
