Stalling in slow traffic

HI there, only had the car a week, 2.0 TDI Altea. 350 miles on clock. Will not run in 2nd in slow traffic, have to put it into 1st.

When it stalls it stops dead. My First Diesel so it may be I am just used to running a petrol where if it stalls when rolling in slow traffic you could often just 'bump' it going again. With this it often will not start at all straight away. Have to completely turn off and start from scratch.

Read somewhere it may be the new engine is tight and it will loosen up, but scared the hell out of the lady when it would not restart in middle lane of M25.

Will give the dealer a ring in the morning but thought I would ask here too.

As I said perhaps it's just getting used to the diesel.

Is this with the new commonrail diesel engine? I'm not sure which model you've got but the 170 engine is now commonrail injection, and a few people are commenting that it's easy to stall. The older PD engine was dead easy to drive but the commonrail doesn't seem to follow that trend.

Do you mean it stalls if you roll the car at idling speeds while in 2nd?
it sounds odd this happens, i test drove the leon fr 170 and did notice the cr engine did lacked power at idle compared to a 1.6d van I use for work, but it should be able to at least keep the car moving forward id of thought.
I've read the engine does loosen up after about a 1000 miles perhaps it simply needs some more mileage?

Very strange, I wont be getting mine for about another month so sadly cant go out and test this :(
maybe someone else could comment with the 170ps cr engine? :)

Is your idle rpm around 800?

The main reason for it stalling could be that your going too slow for the car to travel in second gear, thats what it seems like anyway.

And the reason for completely off, to on again.

I think this is just a safety feature, so you cant twist through to the iginition when the engine has already been started, someone quote if wrong though.

The starting issue also happens on mines, so i think its through the board.

Maybe you are just trying to get used to the different gearing of the diesel :)

It's the engine. I had the chance to drive a new TDI CR 140 in a Skoda Yeti and it was dead easy to stall. You just have to get used to the engine. :)

Thanks for all the advice. I am sure it is just a matter of getting used to it. I will still take it in to the dealer to get them to check. As it is only a week old.

I have the same problem on my 07 plate you do get used to it as the revs and torque are alot different in the 170ps BMN engine compared to most other diesels ive had....every now and again i do still stall it mine has loosened up abit now after 10,000 it will be interesting to see what excuse the stealers come up with
