Seat Ibiza 1995 the speedo has stopped working.

I have tried 2 other sets of clocks its not that.

Swopped out the entire dash loom and replace with another. Still no speedo

The three wires are plugged into the sender on the gearbox.

Is there a link somewhere on the fusebox for the speedo? does anyone know what colour wire it is?

It was working untill I moved the fusebox and the clocks to fix some bulbs and now it does not. BAH

Its too risky to drive a VR6 Ibiza with no speedo, as warp speed approaches too quick!

Hi I know what you mean about warp speed, got a VR6 MK2 myself ;o)

Change the sender, you can also check the spline drive inside the gearbox by winding it out with a large socket. You may have lost the teeth on the gear.

Cheers

Thanks man, I`ll try that tomorrow. It just seems strange that it co-incides with my buggering around with the electricals.

Anyone know the colour of the wire for the speedo at the fusebox and where it is located?

There is no fuse for the speedometer, the sensor feeds the dash panel directly, where the signal is processed by the dash panel chip to drive the speedometer. According to the wiring diagram, the sensor feed to the dash panel is white/blue at the sensor, turning to brown/white at the dash panel. Somewhere between the two, probably at the firewall, there is a connector where the two different-coloured wires meet. Bear in mind that this is in the Haynes manual which doesn't address the VR6: which seems to be an engine-swap on your part? Certainly doesn't seem to be a factory model. So wiring colours may be off, depends on where you got the parts from.

I think it most likely that you've knocked the connection off somehow. I don't think the speed sensor has failed, you'd have a lot more troubles from the fuel system if it didn't know your road speed :)

Thanks Muttley, that is the voice of sanity I was searching for. I`m gonna go and have another look at the fuse panel.

It is a can of worms, as its a conversion, but the speedo should all be original.

Wow what a day. Put the front of the car up in the air and tried every connection I could on the fusebox, all checked out ok.

No loose wires.

I hadpower at the speed sensor unit.

Tried connecting a hot wire fron the middle wire of the sensor to the clocks. Nothing.

Pulled the sensor off the wifes VR6 Passat. Speedo straight away.

Good work slapbladder.

Now all I have to do is stuff a million wires back into my dash and make it all look lovely again. At least I fixed the dash light that was the start of this saga!

I also put in a monster tacho, mounted the microtech inside the glovebox and changed the steering bush while it was all apart.

Car should be sweet tomorrow.

Thanks for your help guys.
