Spare key help

Hi all, wonder if u can help. I have mis-placed my spare key, know its in house somewhere safe but must be too safe a place as cannot find it myself. After seaching and reading various posts was thinking to get a new key but thought i might as well get another flip key off ebay, get it cut and re-programme it like many people have done with the guide using my original key.

Just a few quick questions!!!

1. How do i know what frequency key to get as the flip key i have does not have any details on it at all or do u have to open the key up to find the frequency details/part numbers etc?

2. I am aware that the only bit i cannot do is programme the transponder for the immobilizer so the new key starts the car. Do the keys off ebay come with a transponder that can be re-programmed or do I have to buy a new transponder which is compatable before going to SEAT and asking them to code it?

3. How much is it to get the transponders coded from SEAT?

4. Does anyone have a pic of the standard 2nd spare key u get with your car as to be honest i cannot remeber what mine looked like and it might jog my memory (Remember to blank your key cut pattern if posting a pic so know one can see it)

Look in the FAQ sub-forum in here, there's a sticky called "Leon flip-key guide" or similar that should answer all of your questions. I recently priced getting a second flip key for mine (since I only got the flip key, not the second one). I got told it would be about £50 to get the key cut, another £50 for the remote with transponder and about 30mins to an hour to reprogram the immobiliser to recognise my key and the new one so about £150 in total.

Since I've only got the one key I think this is my only option.
 
Well when I looked it priced up like this:

Replacement Fob (EBay) ~£30
  • I watched quite a few on ebay go for this price - just double check they come with internals
  • I know when I was planning on doing this on my Mk3 Ibiza Cupra people said both 434MHz and 433MHz transmitters worked regardless, but I can't confirm! It's meant to be written on the side of the fob, but I know it isn't on my Leon.

New Transponder £3.50
  • If you buy a fob without a transponder you can buy a new one here (Hickleys) for SEAT it's AKTP (some have bought AKTP2 specifically)
  • If it came with an old transponder you can add this to your cars "Safe-Key List" with Vag-Tacho (See Below)

Vag-Tacho (Ebay) £30
  • To programme/re-programme a transponder (Well add it's frequency to you "Safe-Key" list you'll need Vag-Tacho

Blank Blade £7-10
  • If your fob comes with an old blade you need one cut - The guy above will sell and cut the blade for £7 to a digital photo (suggest having it delivered to a far-a-way uncle or something!)


So in total about £70-75 for a whole new programmed key? Whether it's worth paying an extra £30-£50 to get SEAT to do it and save you any hassle is another story!

P.S. I may add if you found your spare key an could dig out the transponder all you would need to buy is the new fob + Blade so total = £37!

1. I can buy any frequency key as this is irrelevant and will work after reprogramming using the guide on here. I could even buy any three button key instead of two button and might click lucky with boot release button.

2. If the key I buy already has a transponder which is 1998 onwards then this key just can be added so my immobilizer/ECU accepts this transponder code. I have two options which is to use VAG TACHO method or go to dealers to programme code.

3. Any one got a rough idea on how much it is to do the transponder coding at dealers?

4. Any one got a pic of the standard non-flip key

was fairly interested in getting a spare flip key myself. Now that i've seen how much its going to cost i think i'll just let my missus have the standard non remote key!!

Check the sticky in the FAQ I mentioned originally. I think it's 433MHz.

Basically yes, if you've only got one key/transponder then those are your options. Again, see the guide for more info.

Depends on your dealer, mine reckoned on about half an hour for £36+vat.

4. Any one got a pic of the standard non-flip key

I don't I'm afraid, someone else might have.

I don't think you'll get lucky with the boot release because you need a solenoid for that which isn't present in the car as standard as far as I'm aware?

And yes you can add up to 5 different transponders to you ECU


P.S. I should be able to get a photo of the spare key tonight if I can find mine lol!

Thanks for all the info and clicky's GlanzaV (great stuff), would be grateful if you could get a pic of the key up but remember to blank out your key pattern (Thats if you can find yours, goodluck!)

Still a little confused as to which frequency fob I need, is it 433mhz or 434mhz or any of these two. After reading flip key guide I thought it didnt make a difference, until it was suggested that its 433mhz.

About the boot release, I just thought it would unlock the boot independently from the central locking and leave doors locked! Not expecting it kick it open like on mercs and beamers lol.

Anyone?
