SOS, New Car Jitters, Please Help!!!

As mentioned before, we have a 8v mk2 Gti. Yesterday, the car spluttered, stuttered and stalled as we were pulling away from cold.

This morning the car stalled twice and jerk/jumped on the way to work.

This lunchtime it cut out once then stalled once after starting. It then jumped a few times.

The temp gauge usually sits at halfway. This lunchtime it stayed low. Now this could be down to the short trip it made, I'm not sure, my gf was driving it, it's her car and I'm relaying a lot of info second hand.

My initial thoughts were a spark issue, so was going to do plugs and leads. Is the coil pack worth changing too??? (Picking up Haynes today, forgive q's that may seem obvious, my car has a dizzy cap!)

My second thought which was kind of confirmed with the temp gauge movement (or lack thereof), is that a temp sensor is faulty, the car smelled of fuel this am. Perhaps it's over fuelling and fouling the plugs??

If this is a scenario that anyone knows about, or if it's commonplace, please let me know asap as we are meant to be driving it to Yorkshire on Saturday morning!! I still have the heat shield to sort too!!:(:(:(

Thanks guys

Forgot to mention, the juddering occurred under partial load. From speaking with my gf, I'm not certain the temp is up the swanney. Her festy used to still display the temp once ignition was switched off.

No worries, went and saw my bro, an ex Audi mechanic. We had a play with sensors connections. Checked sparkies, etc. Seems the ht lead for plug 4 was not to secure. A quick bash later and all is well.

Also fixed heat shield. Not something you can hammer off. 1 of 3 bolts had fallen of, leading to nasty vibration after 3k revs. A little bending later, the heat shield no longer vibrates against the exhaust. Actually, it's a heat sink, to keep the CAT cool.
