Shortning Brake pedal Travel

There is far too much travel in my brake pedal. My brakes are good, but i have to push hard to get to them. Any advice on how i can resolve the problem?

(i have 312mm tt brakes btw)

have you checked all the slider pins are in good nick and not seized ? when i first picked up my beeza , 3 out of 4 calipers had this prob , and i had to push the pedal right to the floor to get any kinda braking

The 2 TT calipers were brand new, so wouldnt have thought it was this. However im not too sure what slier pins are.

Oh mark! I mean, can i just get one out of a LCR? I dont know which ones are bigger. I dont know how big mine is... (something about 22?)

what hoses you have?going to braided hoses does help a bit,but i think it is inherent of VAG cars,urban myth thats its just the RHD ones too

Unfortunately this is a common problem for people with brakes with a larger piston capacity than standard. The master cylinder on the car as standard is designed to shift a certain volume of brake fluid for a given level of pedal 'press'. You've now got a larger piston in the brake, so for a given press of the pedal, the same amount of fluid moves, but as the piston is larger, the brake doesn't move as far.

In the S3/TT/Mk4 world, this is a common problem with people who put massive Porsche calipers on their car expecting a huge increase in braking. Yes, you will get better braking, but perhaps not as good as you would have expected because of this problem. Keeping the master cylinder and the brake piston volume in the correct proportions minimises this, which is why the Brembo's off the LCR are such a popular upgrade for this platform. Not only do they offer improved braking, but they also better match the standard master cylinder than more exotic stuff on the market.

As Mark says, you need to source and fit a master cylinder which is better matched to the calipers you are using.

Just had to do mine three times and despite pulling quite a bit out of each nipple and stopping everytime there was no air in the waste pipe it was still lose.
when i went and did them again there was still air in them but after third time the peddle was really tight.

Seals are feeble and will have to be pressure bled tho

definately need a bigger master as JCS mentioned, i heard a notion that an uprated servo may also ease the problem; i am just throwing it out there, 'i know nooothing!'

Do you think all the newer VAG brake servos will be a bolt on job? Or will some fabrication be needed?
