Short shifter / shorter gear stick question...

Ok, so I understand a short shifter changes the actual linkages to the gearbox, but it doesn't affect the actual gear stick, does it?

I drove a BMW 320CD with the M Sport pack the other day, and was suprised at how short the actual gear stick was...

So the ideal set-up work be a short-shifter the shorten the linkages, and then something like a stubby S3 gear-stick to shorten the actual stick?

Presumably then, you could fit an S3 stick without making any changes to the gearbox?

Beemer has a short stubby gear lever because of the big central tunnel housing the prop shaft running up the middle of the car. You may find the gear lever sits a bit low if you cut it down too far.

I cut my gear lever down - by about 1 inch. Its just a case of cutting off how much you want and sticking the knob back on. I've got a little richbrook knob so the shorter shaft suits it.

Do you have a short shifter at the box too?

Not yet. I rang Westec and they said it would be a couple of weeks before they had one in stock.

Not sure if i'll bother now anyway - the gears are notchy enough I think and a short shifter just highlights that from what i've heard

True... I have my seat as low as it will go, but it is something i'd need to think about.

Have you got any pics?

I don't think its any more notchy with my short shifter, although as you say, its is quite notchy.

Westecs couple of weeks can be a couple of months if it's EIP, they order in bulk I think.

i cut mine down, feels ten times better loads more sporty, got a momo gear knob which is quite tall so it needed to be cut for that but i was playing in a few sports cars today and my gear movement isnt far off, id guess its only going to make it a slight bit harder to get into gear due to the lack of leverage if you cut it down but thats it.

no idea bout the short shifter
