Shat nav dilemma

warren_cox

Back from the dead
I was stood in Hellfrauds the other day gawping at the sat nav offers whilst waiting to be served (Mini Moke water pump - wouldn't buy parts for the LCR there).

Saw the prices were keen and the grey matter starting ticking away to thought of driving to my destination without hours of dicking about lost, or avoiding big hold ups....... When I rewoke and took a reality check I thought:

You've already got an Alpine head unit with fold out screen AND a Snooper Neo 6R.

a) Why do you need more kit on your dash board
b) Why not look at using the kit you've got

The Alpine DVD solution is £875 + P&P on top of my existing head unit. Can't believe its that much for a glorified DVD player.

I have a snooper so don't need a Sat Nav device that tells me where cameras are.

Given my dilemma would you:

a) Bear the cost of the Alpine to limit extra unnecessary boxes
b) Get a stand alone basic sat nav so I can take it on walk abouts in big cities
c) Do nothing and wait for the costs to come down futher
d) Sell the Neo 6R and put the money towards an all in one option machine like Snoopers new Indago

I had a demo of the TomTom1 and the speaker was tinny and cack. Other than that it was fast, easy to use and slim to fit in pocket. Bigger tomtoms look better build / facilities but PITA to carry.

Funnily NONE of them had my home address on yet :cartman: :cartman: :cartman:

Answers on a thread pls...!

I would vote for a Tomtom as well.

If you go for a 300, 500 or 700 rather than the 1 then you can use it without the mount and mount it at the bottom of the A pillar on velcro. Means it sits nicely in view but is still quite discrete and you don't have to leave the mount on show (or keep removing it).

I'll post some photo's tomorrow if I remember.

Good man.

I was going to go for the 1 until I heard its tinny voice. Its much faster than the others, but had no bluetooth to answer your phone with.

The 700 has an integral HDD for European street level storage, but now I've seen the processor speed and slimline nature of the one I am tempted to wait until after Christmas, watch the prices and see if they bring out any of the higher end models in this format (sizewise) so I can use it on walkabouts in London.

It's not too bulky to carry around either. I never leave it in the car!!

Where are the power cables?

It's next to the A-pillar. I tuck it out of sight in the corner when not in use.

It runs down the side, under the dash and is connected to a cig lighter socket behind the dash.

looks like I need to do some dashboard housekeeping to fit it in.

Funnily enough just had an email from Snooper about the new Indago but its £599 + delivery so a bit expensive. Screen graphics look great and its quite thin.

If it was hi-fi youu could demo it, even take it home and test it. £600 and your buying blind on a whim!
