Shall I buy: Leon Cupra or Civic Type R

Guys,

I am getting pulled in both directions in regards to what to upgrade my car to.

Plus points for the Seat:

More Power
5 Doors
Better MPG
Seats

Plus points for the Civic:

VTEC Rev Band
Looks inside and out
Engine noise whilst VTEC'ing
Gearbox

Also i have found a company that will lease the Civic Type R GT to me for 3 years for around the £300 a month mark thats with 18,000 miles a year. Not sure whether you can get a Cupra on lease for that sort of money.

I would prefer the Seat as i love the look in them candy white. What do you guys think? obviously you will be biased towards the Seat but lets hear your views.

Thanks,

Tom

^ wouldnt it be better just to buy it?!

I think theres too many CTRs on the road as it is!

Cupras are rarer (if thats a word) and as you say look great in candy white!

Looks wise ild go for the Leon, power wise i dont think the new CTR is as good as the old CTR.

ummmmm, i can see the dilemma - i drove a new Type R 2 weeks ago, thought the ride was nice and firm, steering felt good, seats were to die for they were that comfy and the dashboard was like Darth Vadars bathroom!

IMO the Type R just doesnt feel fast and as for the VTEC - what??? was i supposed to feel a surge of power??? lol

granted once you gaze down you are going some but i prefer the Cupra. Brakes are better, steering, ride, and think it sounds better - nothing better that the whistle and then the dump of air from a turbo lol. Cupra makes me feel like a dog with two d**ks. Well the test drive at least!!

But the contract hire are good on them - was does that tell you?

I have recently changed from CTR to leon FR basically I wnated a diesel for tax reasons! Have always driven Honda ubtil this point had two EP3 (old civic) and the FN2 the new 1!

I changed because Honda do not do a sporty diesel engine! If I had the choice between the two I would have the Honda. Much more fun to drive, the vtec engine is awsome although you do have to rev it hard to get the best out of it! The Honda is slightly quicker than the Curpra around a track but in real world there is noting in it!

The new CTR is certainly no slower then the old 1 dont listen to clarkson he is a t:ban:at! It certainly handles better as well! My EP3 had LSD and uprated coilovers and I could take more speed into corners with the FN2.

The CTR looks cool and the inside is a good place to be and I agree the seats are suberb! If you are thinkig of modding then I would get the cupra much easier to get power from a forced induced engine! I spent almost 8,000 on gettting an extra 65 BHP out of the old CTR! Spend £400 and you could get a 300bhp cupra!

Just my thoughts;)

Me and the missus were thinking of chopping in the leon for a K1, and yes remap the cupra and it will fly! And as mikey said its very little money for increased BHP!

sorry to hijack the thread but what do people pay insurance wise?! im 22 this yr, so need to be able to afford it!

5drs is also good for children (not that i have any)

Nice one for your replies, spoke to Irfan today and he has given me some interesting numbers to think about. Think its gonna have to be an extended test drive of them both :):):)

i work with a couple of lads that both had new ctr's. they both had gearbox trouble from week 1 and theyve both chopped them in. one of them now drives a diesel fr, the other a new clio sport.
interestingly neither of them regret it!

A K1 for me is £590 fully comp, im thirty and the missis is 26, she would be on the insurance full comp.

Can only imagine that as your 22 you have to be realistic and expect to pay 1K or more!

i would wait till you cross the 25 mark, but then again i have never listened to anyone!!

IMO the Type R just doesnt feel fast and as for the VTEC - what??? was i supposed to feel a surge of power??? lol

the k20a in a int he new type r, is a ivtec nodel, with a lwered vtec point, basically softening it for the mass's
so no you wont feel it like you would in a old bseries'd engine civic.

the civic type s diesel has 140 bhp, and is only 0.4 of a second slower to 60 against a fr on book figures, so it iant that bad, not sure if they can be tuned or not though. no dpf though, which is a plus in my book

as for a r32 to cupra, quite alot of reviews i've read have rated the cupra the best in the vag stable, including the r32's, so it makes sense to me

Here is my view;

I love Hondas and have owned 2 Civic VTi 1.6's in previous years and know what all the fuss is about with the whole VTEC thing - its awesome. If you don't know what the fuss is about go take a test drive. The interior of the new Civic is very cool, probably modelled on a Japanese high speed train, and the dash is light years ahead of the Cupra. Awesome cars :)

However.....

The Cupra would absolutely kill the new Civic Type R in any performance test and thats the whole point of owning a hot hatch. It has 45 bhp more, bigger brakes, a lot more torque and importantly, £500 would give the same power as a supercharger conversion on the Type R.

I have had a few encounters with Type R's on the road and strip, and they just don't cut the mustard.

The current jap version on the other hand......

......is a whole different kettle of fish. Mucho respect for this variant of the CTR, but my money still went on the Cupra ;)

If this is a company car and you still don't figure out which one, follow your pocket. This way you cannot lose out financially in the long run.

I test drove the new CTR GT too - I thought it was flat, boring, had no pull and a revvy engine which revs to a billion RPM which you have to rev the balls off to get something (which i hate)especially when I have a TDI and have to change at 4100rpm :D, Havent drove a MK2 Leon yet though but looks, performance and rarity all swing in favour of the MK2 ;)
