Shaking engine?

Today when i took my car from the lockup, i heard a small rattling noise, so i opened the bonnet and the engine was shaking a bit. Now i've never had the bonnet open whilst the engine is running yet, so is this normal? I don't think it is. Called SEAT assistance out and getting them to check it over. I'm thinking it might be a loose engine mount or something like that? It's when the engine is ticking over and when it's revved that you hear the rattling/vibrating noise. It still drives fine and there's no loss of power or anything obvious. I'm just back from a 900 mile round trip to Brands Hatch and back and i never heard it then. Only today. I'm a bit concerned. Everything seemed to be going fine until today.

Well the AA man arrived and said the engine was supposed to move like that, it's just that i hadn't seen it before when it was running. He reckons the noise is something to do with the halfshaft to the gearbox. The noise goes away when you press the clutch. Taking it to the dealers early tomorrow to get them to look at it.

I think the shaking is probably normal - I remember being shocked how much movement there is from the TDI engine when I first lifted the bonnet with the engine running - the mounts must be very soft.

I have read on this forum, that vibes on the mounts affects TDI's so much that it can break the cable-feed to the starter solenoid eventually. It even affected the Ford Escort and BMC Mini. ( my own info. ).

My Mk4 Ibiza TDi is booked into SEAT this afternoon for a very similar problem!!

On mine you hear an obvious knocking noise mostly when going over bumps/braking/over pot-holes etc. It doesnt stop when the clutch is depressed or when out of gear - its not the engine either.

Will report back later this evening once its (hopefully) fixed, and let you know what it was! :)

:headhurt:

....Turned out one of the HID Xenon ballasts had come loose/shaking around! Kicking myself, if I had a serious look round I might have been able to find this myself - however the noise DID sound alot more serious! £70 out of pocket too!
