Servicing costs - Petrol vs Diesel FR

I have done a search but cannot find the answer as to difference in servicing costs on a Petrol vs Diesel.

Surprisingsly, the couple of quotes I have received so far, the Diesel FR costs more to insure than the petrol, but only by difference in road tax so no problem there really.

As I have never owned a Diesel before, I am wondering if Diesel service costs more than petrol?

As I will only be doing 12K-15K difference in fuel costs won't matter too much - so only other consideration is servicing (and of course resale value after 5 years as that's how long I plan to keep it).

Any info on differences in servicing costs would be appreciated!

Cheers

Cheers all - so not much difference to worry about then...

Will probably choose the TDI over petrol as drove the Golf GT (hire car) for a weekend, and was very impressed.

But the DSG is tempting on the petrol ...... [B)]

Got these figures from White Dove in Cardiff when I ordered mine last October:-

TFSI
10K £144.72
20K £179.43
30K £144.72
40K £248.82
Total £717.69

TDI
10K £191.56
20K £226.27
30K £191.56
40K £226.27
Total £835.66

Difference is £117.97 therefore the diesel is approximately 15% more expensive to service.

Based on my experience the diesel is the more economical but the engine is definitely noisy compared to the petrol (it’s a function of the PD engine). The TFSI (Golf GTI) engine is a fabulously quite and smooth engine but it will cost you more in petrol (typically 30 mpg compared to say 45 mpg for the diesel) over say 15k per year it will cost you an extra 500 quid in fuel cost.

The petrol FR is cheaper to buy but the extra cost of the diesel engine will easily repay itself come time to part ex as the British public love diesel engines. If the extra noise and rough exhaust note of the diesel is not an issue with you (and the differences are pretty subtle) then go for the diesel the cosy of extra servicing will be well paid back by the fuel savings.

It’s all down to personal preference, when I first got my diesel compared to the petrol I was surprised by the noisy engine and rough sound to the exhaust. I was converted to the diesel though as I was impressed with the economy and the fabulous torque. 37,000 miles later I am going back to the petrol TFSI as the diesel noise gets on my nerves, but hey that’s just me. Having driven the TFSI engine it’s so smooth and quite compared to diesel I just have to have that compared to the noisy diesel.
